Liverpool have been speculated to make a move for one of Tottenham Hotspur’s top players if the north London club is relegated from the Premier League. This possibility has sparked discussions among football analysts and fans, especially considering Tottenham’s current position in the league table.
Tottenham are currently 17th, just one point above West Ham in the relegation zone. Their performance this season has been disappointing, leading to the departure of manager Thomas Frank after only eight months in charge. The Croatian manager Igor Tudor was appointed as interim manager, but his tenure did not bring the desired improvement. Under Tudor, Tottenham failed to win any league games, suffering four defeats and earning just one point during their match at Anfield.
The decision to part ways with Tudor came after a significant 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest, a team that poses a real threat to their survival. Following this, Roberto De Zerbi took over as manager and has helped the team recover slightly. Despite losing his first game to Sunderland, De Zerbi has guided Spurs to seven points in subsequent matches, including draws and wins against Brighton, Wolves, and Aston Villa.
However, the risk of relegation remains high for Tottenham, who were once competing in a Champions League final. A potential relegation could lead to a mass exodus of key players, with Micky van de Ven being one of the most likely departees. Van de Ven, who joined Spurs in 2023 for £43 million from Wolfsburg, has been linked with a move to Liverpool due to the Reds’ need for defensive reinforcements.

Liverpool nearly signed Marc Guehi last summer but missed out when he moved to Manchester City in January. Jason McAteer, a former Tottenham player, believes that Liverpool could target Van de Ven if the situation at Tottenham worsens. McAteer suggested on the Footy Accumulators podcast that Liverpool might consider the move, given their need for another centre-half.
He noted that while Leoni and Jacquet have been brought in, they still require more defensive options. McAteer pointed out that Van de Ven appears to be available, and if Tottenham is relegated, they may look to offload him for a lower price.
Tim Sherwood, another former Tottenham manager, also sees Van de Ven as a suitable target for Liverpool. He highlighted that there are few left-sided defenders of Van de Ven’s quality available, and Jarrad Branthwaite is unlikely to join Liverpool. Sherwood believes that Van de Ven has the potential to become a top-drawer player but needs to develop further, particularly in leadership.

A poll conducted by the outlet asks whether Van de Ven would be a good signing for Liverpool:
- Yes – he is exactly what they need
- No – there are better options out there
Sherwood added that Van de Ven would benefit from playing alongside experienced players like Virgil van Dijk, learning how to lead and improve his overall game. He emphasized that it’s a learning curve, but Van de Ven is a viable option for Liverpool.
