Lyon Reflects on King’s Tough Day

St Kilda Faces Injury Challenges After Strong Win

St Kilda has managed to maintain a balanced record of 4-4 following a strong victory over Carlton on Saturday. However, the team is now dealing with a series of injuries that have come at a particularly difficult time. With challenging fixtures ahead against Gold Coast, Fremantle, and Hawthorn, the Saints are facing an arduous month.

During the match against Carlton, two key players were forced out late in the game. Jack Higgins, who suffered a concussion, was replaced by Liam O’Connell, while Darcy Wilson, who fell ill, was substituted by Jack Macrae. Additionally, small forward Dan Butler sustained a left hamstring injury during the game.

The most concerning injury occurred earlier in the day during a corresponding VFL match when St Kilda’s spearhead, Max King, suffered a hamstring injury in his second game back from a long period on the sidelines. This setback has added to the challenges the team is currently facing.

In a post-game presser, Ross Lyon expressed hope that King’s injury would not be too severe. He mentioned that the situation was unexpected and unsettling, as several players had been ruled out before the match. Lyon said:

“It wasn’t an easy day in some respects with the phone calls in the morning with players going down. That was a bit unexpected, so that always unsettles you a little bit.

“I was watching it and (King) was looking good. They will scan it tomorrow, it looks something on the lower end.

“I did speak about it during the week, that was the risk after such a long lay off, we are trying to manage that soft tissue. He will be disappointed, but he has overcome bigger things.”

Lyon also noted that Paddy Dow might have suffered a concussion in the second quarter. Despite these challenges, he praised the performance of the VFL team, highlighting their hard work and the way they adapted by sending players into the senior squad.

Before his injury, King’s performance in the VFL appeared promising. The 25-year-old managed to kick 2.1 goals early in the match. The incident happened in the second quarter when King took a mark leading out in front inside 50. He appeared to pull up short, and instead of kicking for goal, he passed to a teammate before leaving the ground in a slow jog.

This latest setback underscores the difficulties St Kilda is facing as they navigate through a demanding schedule. The team will need to regroup and focus on managing their injuries effectively to prepare for the upcoming matches. With the right strategies and support, the Saints aim to overcome these challenges and continue their strong performance on the field.
