Ross Lyon’s Vision for AFL Expansion in the Northern Territory
Ross Lyon, the coach of St Kilda, has proposed a significant expansion of the Australian Football League (AFL) in the northern region, advocating for every club to play at least one game in Darwin. This initiative aims to increase the AFL’s presence in the Top End and bring more opportunities to local communities.
St Kilda recently played their first regular-season game at TIO Stadium against the Gold Coast Suns, resulting in a 13.11 (89) to 8.12 (60) loss. Despite the outcome, the Saints’ coach praised the experience, highlighting the positive atmosphere and the quality of the playing surface.

The Gold Coast Suns will remain in Darwin to face Port Adelaide on Friday, while Melbourne is set to play against GWS in Alice Springs later this month. These games underscore the growing interest in bringing AFL matches to regional areas.
A Rich Footballing Heritage
The Top End has a long and storied history in Australian Rules football. One notable figure is Gold Coast defender Daniel Rioli, who comes from a well-known footballing family in the Northern Territory. His presence in the AFL highlights the talent that the region can produce.
Lyon was questioned about whether the humid conditions affected his team during the match, but he strongly defended the decision to play in Darwin. “The ground was great, and there was good energy in the crowd,” he said.

Expanding AFL Exposure
Lyon’s vision goes beyond just one or two games. He believes the AFL should hold nine games in Darwin each year, with every club participating. “Why give it to one club and two games?” he asked. “I’m sure they’d get some government support. Everyone do some heavy lifting for the Territory – they produce great players.”
This approach would not only boost the AFL’s profile in the region but also provide valuable exposure to local fans. Lyon emphasized that spreading the nine games throughout the season would ensure consistent engagement and excitement.

Benefits for the Local Community
Lyon’s proposal also includes a focus on supporting Indigenous players from Darwin and the NT. By increasing the number of games in the region, the AFL could create more pathways for young athletes and help nurture future stars.
“We talk about expansion, everyone shares the nine games,” Lyon said. “Everyone do a heavy lift and put on a show in Darwin… everyone have a go. That would light up the city.”
He added that St Kilda would play their part, and he expects other clubs to follow suit. “We’d play our part, I’m sure other clubs would – well, they should. Would that help Indigenous players in Darwin and the NT?”
Conclusion
Ross Lyon’s push for an expanded AFL presence in Darwin represents a bold step towards greater inclusivity and regional development. By involving all clubs and spreading the games throughout the season, the AFL can create lasting benefits for the Northern Territory. This initiative not only highlights the rich footballing heritage of the area but also offers new opportunities for players and fans alike.
