Madden’s Tigers Return: The Inside Story

Jock Madden has officially rejoined the Wests Tigers, bringing a wealth of experience and depth to the club’s halves for the upcoming NRL season. The 25-year-old playmaker, who initially debuted for the Tigers in 2021, returns to Concord after a three-season stint with the Brisbane Broncos. His decision to return was significantly influenced by a strong personal push from Wests Tigers coach Benji Marshall.

Madden revealed that discussions between Marshall and his manager played a crucial role in his homecoming. “There was a big drive factor from Benji, and it’s really good to be back,” Madden shared. This isn’t the first time Marshall has had a significant impact on Madden’s career. During Madden’s initial tenure at the club, Marshall was still an active player, and he served as a mentor.

“He knows the game really well, and he instils a lot of confidence in you as well,” Madden explained. “To be mentored by him and coached by him, I’m really looking forward to it and excited for it.” He fondly recalled, “When I first started here, he was still playing, and he taught me a lot and showed me a lot about the game back then, too.”

The experienced playmaker, known for his organised approach, level-headedness, and a formidable kicking game, felt that the timing was right to return to the NRL rather than pursue opportunities overseas. While there was interest from international clubs, including Hull FC, Madden’s focus remained on the Australian competition. “Overseas didn’t really drive me in this part of my career at the moment, so being back here is a really good opportunity,” he stated.

While the halves positions appear to be competitive, with reports suggesting Jarome Luai and Adam Doueihi are set to be the primary pairing, and young talent Latu Fainu training as a utility on the bench, Madden is determined to secure a regular spot in the team’s spine.

Madden’s Ambitions for Regular Game Time

Madden’s primary goal is clear: to be playing week in and week out. He emphasised his commitment to proving his worth through consistent effort on the training paddock. “I want to be playing week in, week out. I can control what I can do out in the training park at the moment here and want to put my best foot forward,” he asserted.

He also highlighted the positive camaraderie within the squad, despite the inherent competition for spots. “We’re all really good mates, and we all get along really well. When we go out in the training park, we all challenge each other and push ourselves for those high standards,” Madden commented. This collaborative environment, he believes, will ultimately benefit the team as a whole.

Marshall’s Endorsement and Expectations

Coach Benji Marshall expressed his enthusiasm for Madden’s return, believing he will be a significant asset to the Wests Tigers both on and off the field. Marshall described Madden as a player who possesses a sharp footballing brain and a powerful kicking game, coupled with an exceptional work ethic.

“Jock is a smart player with a strong kicking game and a great work ethic,” Marshall stated. He further elaborated on Madden’s value to the team, saying, “He will be a valuable addition to our squad on and off the field. We look forward to welcoming him back.” This endorsement from his coach underscores the confidence the club has in Madden’s ability to contribute to their success in the upcoming season. His return is seen as a strategic move to bolster the team’s leadership and tactical execution in the crucial halves positions.
