Magpie’s Grin: Star Returns to Training

Bobby Hill Returns to Training: A Boost for Collingwood’s Season

Collingwood’s premiership hero, Bobby Hill, has made a welcome return to official club training, signalling a significant step towards a potential AFL recall later this season. Hill had been on an extended period of leave due to personal matters, and for a time, there were concerns that the 2023 Norm Smith Medal winner might not feature again this year.

However, the dynamic forward made an appearance at the club last Friday, receiving warm embraces from his teammates and coaches. He officially joined them for training on Monday, a sight that brought smiles to many faces within the Magpies’ camp.

Cautious Optimism Surrounds Hill’s Comeback

Collingwood’s football department boss, Charlie Gardiner, expressed a sense of cautious optimism regarding Hill’s return. “He has expressed a desire to get back in and put his head down and work hard,” Gardiner commented. “But, as I said, it (his progression) may not be linear. We will continue to support him and hopefully he can continue to keep taking steps forward.”

In recent weeks, Hill had been undertaking training at suburban grounds. On Monday, he participated in skills work for over an hour, showcasing his signature speed and pinpoint kicking. While he didn’t join in any match simulation drills, his presence and performance were noted by his teammates.

The Magpies anticipate that the 26-year-old will require at least two months of dedicated training before he is considered ready for a senior match. “He has done a bit of training, but he’s really just at the start line,” Gardiner elaborated.

A Long Road Ahead, But Spirits are High

Gardiner emphasised the significant training block ahead for Hill. “He’ll have a big block of training ahead of him, but we’ll be guided by our medical team and our high-performance team.” He stressed that there are no firm timelines for a senior recall at this stage. “We are all just thrilled he’s happy. He’s got a smile on his face. He’s enjoying and has energy for training, which is excellent.”

Hill had signed a four-year contract extension in April of last year, prior to taking his leave for personal reasons. He made a brief return for a single senior appearance as a substitute in August, but was ultimately not selected for the 2025 finals campaign.

Defensive Stalwarts Set for Return

In other news from the Magpies’ camp, Gardiner confirmed that captain Darcy Moore and fellow key defender Jeremy Howe are expected to return from their respective injuries for Collingwood’s clash against GWS on Friday night. Both players had been sidelined, impacting the Magpies’ 1-1 start to the season before their recent bye. Moore has been dealing with a hamstring issue, while Howe has been recovering from a calf complaint. Their return will undoubtedly bolster Collingwood’s defensive stocks.
