Manly Veteran Siosiua Taukeiaho Injured in Dramatic Incident
Manly veteran Siosiua Taukeiaho was stretchered off the field during a “concerning” moment in the Sea Eagles’ 32-4 victory over reigning premiers Brisbane. The 34-year-old suffered a fractured tibia and fibula, potentially sidelining him for up to a year.
Taukeiaho had been in excellent form during the match, contributing significantly with over 120 metres gained in his stint off the bench. His performance reached a high point when he crossed for a rare try early in the second half, running onto a flat pass from Nathan Brown and forcing his way over the line.
However, the moment took a dramatic turn as Taukeiaho got his legs tangled with a couple of Broncos defenders while planting the ball down. He immediately screamed out in agony, prompting concern among players and fans alike.
Greg Alexander, speaking on Fox League, described the incident:
“He’s hurt himself in doing so … he holds the ball and gets it down, momentum has dragged him into the in-goal area.“
Replays showed an awkward landing for Taukeiaho, with the knee of Cory Paix appearing to come down on his lower leg. Word quickly spread that it was a suspected fractured tibia, and Manly’s medical staff attended to him with a green whistle.
The front-rower was then stretchered from the field as fans and head coach Kieran Foran watched with clear concern for Taukeiaho’s wellbeing.
Lead commentator Dan Ginnane expressed his shock:
“That’s ugly … these are concerning scenes, the green whistle is coming out and this is not good, this is a dour moment.”
He added:
“He’s been a wonderful player. You don’t want to draw too harsh a conclusion but at his age and his contract, this is obviously a serious injury. If that is the end, what a way to go out – scoring a try, putting your body on the line.“
Taukeiaho was taken to a nearby hospital and will undergo surgery, which could place him on the shelf indefinitely.
“It’s not good, I’ve just spoken to the doc,” Foran told Fox League post-game.
“It’s a pretty bad break in his leg, he will be going in for surgery hopefully overnight.“
Despite the injury, Taukeiaho’s four-pointer helped extend the lead for the Sea Eagles, who pushed further ahead when Tolu Koula raced away for a long-range try with 20 minutes remaining. Reuben Garrick put the icing on the cake for the home side in the dying stages as the Sea Eagles cemented themselves in the NRL’s top-eight.
Impact on the Team and Fans
The injury has left both the team and fans in shock, with many expressing their support for Taukeiaho on social media. His contribution to the game was significant, and his absence will undoubtedly affect the team’s dynamics moving forward.
Fans have been vocal about their concerns, with many hoping for a swift recovery. The Sea Eagles will now need to adjust their strategy without one of their key players, especially with the upcoming season looming.
What’s Next?
As the team prepares for the next phase of the season, the focus will shift to how they can adapt to the loss of Taukeiaho. The medical team will provide updates on his condition, and the coaching staff will work on finding replacements for his role on the field.
For now, the Sea Eagles will continue to support their injured player, hoping for a positive outcome and a return to the field soon.
