Marsh loses it as Prince unsettles King Kohli

Mitch Marsh Shines as Lucknow Super Giants End Losing Streak

Australia’s Mitch Marsh delivered a stunning century to lead Lucknow Super Giants to a crucial victory over the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, in a rain-affected Indian Premier League match on Friday (AEST). The win marked a significant turnaround for Lucknow, who had been languishing at the bottom of the table with a six-match losing streak.

The game was reduced to 19 overs per side due to rain interruptions, and Lucknow managed to post a total of 3-209. Marsh played a pivotal role in this total, scoring an impressive 111 off just 56 balls. His innings featured nine sixes and nine fours, showcasing his aggressive style of play. Despite falling to Australian teammate Josh Hazlewood (1-49), Marsh’s contribution proved decisive in securing the nine-run victory using the DLS method.

” It has been a tough season, nice to get on the right side, really good for morale, disappointing season until today,” Marsh said after the match. “A few of the Indian boys said before the game the pitch looked better so I tried to maximise the powerplay. I just tried to get as many as I could in the powerplay, get a good start and have an impact on the game.”

Key Performances from Both Sides

Bengaluru faced a revised target of 213 runs, but their chase was hampered by a poor start. India legend Virat Kohli fell for a two-ball duck, with his off stump knocked over by Prince Yadav (3-33) in the second over. This left Bengaluru at 2-9, and they struggled to recover from there.

Captain Rajat Patidar showed some resilience with a 61 off 31 balls, while Tim David (40), Krunal Pandya (28 not out), and Romario Shepherd (23 not out) also contributed. However, their efforts were not enough to reach the target.

Lucknow’s bowling attack, led by Prince Yadav, played a crucial role in restricting Bengaluru. The return of Shahbaz Ahmed to the lineup also made a difference, as he dismissed Patidar and helped restrict the opposition’s scoring rate.

A Tough Season for Bengaluru

Despite the loss, Bengaluru remained in third place on the points table. Captain Patidar acknowledged the challenges his team faced: “It was a good game for us, for sure. We have been trying a lot of things, it means a lot for us. We have been trying to put together a perfect game where batting and bowling comes together, we have had some bad luck, but really happy to get a win here.”

Kohli’s first IPL duck since 2023 was a major blow for Bengaluru, leaving them struggling at 2-9. However, Patidar’s aggressive batting, especially against Mayank Yadav and Digvesh Rathi, provided some hope. Unfortunately, Lucknow’s disciplined bowling eventually sealed the victory.

Marsh’s Dominance in the Powerplay

Marsh’s performance was the highlight of the match. His second 50-plus score of the season set the tone for Lucknow’s challenging total. He reached his half-century off just 20 balls and later scored his first hundred of the season off 49 balls.

Lucknow’s innings saw them race to 0-95 in nine overs when rain briefly stopped play. Marsh dominated the pace of his fellow Australian, Josh Hazlewood, and was equally aggressive against Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya. He scored 90 of his runs in boundaries, showcasing his ability to hit the ball cleanly.

Rishabh Pant provided a perfect finish to the innings, smashing 32 off 10 balls. He hit the last three balls from Rasikh Salam Dar for 4, 4, and 6, adding 64 runs in the final five overs.

Conclusion

This victory was a much-needed boost for Lucknow Super Giants, who now sit at the bottom of the table with three wins this season. For Bengaluru, the loss was a setback, but they remain in the top three of the standings. With four games remaining, both teams will look to build on their performances in the coming matches.
