Matildas’ Trailblazers Clash with Football Australia Over New Membership Program
A significant rift has emerged between Football Australia (FA) and some of the Matildas’ most esteemed former players, dubbed the “trailblazers,” concerning the recent launch of a new membership program, “Matildas FC.” Critics, primarily represented by the Matildas Alumni group, allege that the program, while offering perks like complimentary tickets, contains a code of conduct that effectively silences dissent and criticism towards the sport’s governing body. This controversy unfolds just as Australia prepares to host the Women’s Asian Cup, a moment that should be focused on celebrating the team’s achievements.
Historically, former Matildas players have received complimentary tickets to international matches without any formal affiliation or sign-up process. However, the introduction of Matildas FC has altered this arrangement, introducing a new set of requirements for former internationals to access such benefits. The core of the dispute lies in the program’s code of conduct, which Matildas Alumni argues acts as a gag order on past greats.
The Code of Conduct: A Double-Edged Sword
The Matildas Alumni has formally voiced its concerns regarding the stipulations within the Matildas FC code of conduct. A spokesperson for the group articulated the predicament faced by former players: “The imposed code of conduct attached to the platform functions as a silencing mechanism, restricting Alumni from expressing views that may be critical of FA.” This creates a difficult choice for these women, who are essentially being asked to choose between retaining access to benefits and maintaining their freedom of expression. “Alumni are left cornered: refuse to join and lose access to benefits, or join and surrender freedom of expression. Either path diminishes agency and dignity,” the spokesperson stated.
Specifically, the code of conduct for Matildas FC members states that they must “refrain from making public comments and/or statements that bring or may bring Football Australia” into disrepute.
The implications of breaching this clause are stark, with the code adding that failure to comply “may result in forfeiture of benefits or revocation of membership.”
Football Australia, in response to these accusations, defended the code of conduct as merely outlining “basic expectations” for members. A spokesperson for the organisation commented to AAP, stating that the code operates similarly to the terms and conditions found in any other membership program. “It sets out the basic expectations that accompany the benefits of Matildas FC and Socceroos FC membership,” the spokesperson explained. They further emphasised that this is a “standard feature of membership programs” and that FA provides “channels available for raising concerns or providing feedback directly.”
Exclusion of ‘B’ Internationals Sparks Further Outrage
Adding another layer of concern for former national team players is the exclusive nature of the Matildas FC program. The program currently only extends invitations to players who have earned over 200 ‘A’ international caps, thereby excluding a significant number of players who previously represented Australia and earned ‘B’ international caps.
Between 1978 and 2004, thirty-four players received ‘B’ caps for participating in international games for Australia. While FA retrospectively recognised the achievements of these ‘B’ cap internationals in 2022 and they had regularly received complimentary tickets, they are now notably excluded from the Matildas FC membership. This exclusion has left many of these pioneers, some of whom had already made travel and accommodation arrangements for the upcoming Asian Cup, without the promised tickets.
Matildas Alumni has highlighted that these ‘B’ internationals were only informed of this change in privileges within the last month. This comes despite assurances received in July of the previous year from the Asian Cup organisers, who had promised them the same treatment as their ‘A’ international counterparts.
The Matildas Alumni spokesperson passionately articulated the historical significance of these excluded players: “For almost 50 years, these women have stood as pioneers of the Matildas – they represented Australia with pride at a time when there was no pay, little recognition, and minimal institutional support. They built the foundations of the national team through sacrifice and resilience.” The spokesperson continued, “To now exclude them from receiving complimentary tickets for a home tournament, after years in which Alumni were provided access to Matildas matches on Australian soil, is not merely inconsistent — it is profoundly disrespectful.”
Football Australia confirmed that the Matildas FC and Socceroos FC membership programs are specifically designated for players recognised as ‘Matildas’ and ‘Socceroos’, a status that is exclusively granted to players who have participated in ‘A’ Internationals. However, the organisation declined to specify when the ‘B’ internationals were officially notified of their ineligibility for complimentary tickets.
