Matildas’ Dream: Lincoln’s Shock Call-Up

Roar Goalkeeper Steps Up for Matildas Amidst Heartbreak

A shadow has fallen over the Matildas’ Women’s Asian Cup campaign with the devastating withdrawal of star goalkeeper Teagan Micah due to concussion. The 28-year-old, a key figure in the squad announced just last week, was forced to pull out days later, still suffering the repercussions of a head knock sustained during training with her club side, Lyon, over a month ago.

This unfortunate turn of events has opened the door for Brisbane Roar’s Chloe Lincoln, who was named as Micah’s replacement on Saturday. The 21-year-old custodian described the call-up as a “bitter-sweet” moment.

“My first reaction was just devastation for Teags, because I know this tournament would have meant a lot to her,” Lincoln shared. “I send her all the well wishes in the world, and I really hope she’s on the mend and can have a speedy recovery.”

Despite the mixed emotions, Lincoln is eager to embrace the opportunity. “I was super surprised and feeling super honoured after being called up,” she admitted. “I just really want to go there and try and help the group as much as possible. It will be an amazing opportunity.”

She acknowledged the significant shoes she has to fill. “I’m devastated for Teags, but hoping that I can help try and fill her shoes, which will be very difficult to do because she’s an incredible player and person, and she will be missed.”

Matildas’ Asian Cup Campaign Kicks Off

The Matildas are set to commence their Asian Cup journey next Sunday evening, facing the Philippines at Optus Stadium in Perth. With Micah’s absence, Mackenzie Arnold is expected to don the No. 1 jersey for the tournament. Lincoln and uncapped Jada Whyman will likely vie for the understudy position, a crucial role in any major international competition.

Lincoln, who has earned three caps since her debut in December 2024, recently showcased her shot-stopping abilities in Brisbane Roar’s 2-0 defeat against Adelaide. She was instrumental in keeping the scoreline respectable for much of the match, pulling off a series of impressive saves.

However, the young goalkeeper is already looking to learn from her experiences, including a moment late in Sunday’s game where she was unable to prevent a header from Adelaide’s Ella Tonkin from finding the back of the net. Lincoln explained that her vision was obstructed by players in front of her as the ball sailed towards the far post.

“I just lost vision of it, a few people in front of me,” Lincoln told Paramount. “I’ll try to be better and learn from it next time. It’s always disappointing to concede. I’m looking forward to reflecting on that one and seeing what I can do differently.”

Her call-up to the national squad signifies a significant step in her burgeoning career, and she is determined to prove her worth on the international stage. The experience gained in the upcoming tournament will undoubtedly be invaluable for Lincoln’s development as a goalkeeper. The Matildas will be looking to her to provide solid support between the posts as they aim for success in the Women’s Asian Cup. The team’s depth in the goalkeeping department, even with the unfortunate setback, highlights the strong talent pool within Australian women’s football.
