Mavericks defeat Swifts in dramatic clash to secure fourth place

Melbourne Mavericks Secure Top Four Spot with Thrilling Victory

The Melbourne Mavericks have solidified their position in the Super Netball top four after a thrilling 62-60 win against the NSW Swifts. This victory came after a closely contested match that saw both teams exchange leads multiple times, showcasing the high level of competition in the league.

The game took place at the John Cain Arena on Saturday, where the Mavericks faced off against the Swifts for the second time this season. In their previous encounter in round two, the Mavericks lost by a narrow margin of 70-69, but this time they managed to turn the tables in their favor.

With less than two minutes remaining in the game, the Mavericks found themselves trailing by just one goal. However, a crucial moment came when the Swifts’ goal shooter, Grace Nweke, made a turnover, which the Mavericks quickly capitalized on. This pivotal play set the stage for the final moments of the match.

Maddie Hay, a former member of the Swifts, played a key role in securing the victory. She stepped up with a spectacular touch after receiving a looping ball from the Swifts, which ultimately clinched the win for the Mavericks. The crowd was elated as the team celebrated this hard-fought victory.

This win moves the Mavericks (4-4) one step ahead in the top four standings, with six rounds still to go. The team’s performance has been impressive, especially considering the challenges they have faced throughout the season.

Defender Jessie Grenvold continued to shine after taking over from Tara Hinchliffe, who was sidelined due to a knee injury. Grenvold contributed significantly with five gains and four intercepts, putting pressure on the Swifts’ goal shooter, Grace Nweke.

Despite missing part of the game due to sickness, Hay was instrumental in the Mavericks’ success. She recorded 25 feeds and 21 goal assists, while goal shooter Shimona Nelson performed exceptionally well, scoring 57 goals out of 60 shots.

Grenvold expressed her excitement about the win, saying, “I could kiss Maddie Hay, oh, my god, that was incredible. We just needed one more touch, and she delivered for the team.” She also praised the entire team, stating, “I’m just proud of all the girls. We’ve been working so hard on fighting through the games and learning how to win, and I just feel like we absolutely showed that out there tonight.”

The victory would have had significant implications for the NSW Swifts (2-6), as it could have placed them firmly in the finals conversation and put them equal with the Mavericks on points. However, they were unable to hold on to their lead.

Centre Maddy Proud was a standout performer for the Swifts, recording 27 feeds and 17 goal assists. Young player Grace Whyte also made an impact, landing four Super Shots along with 29 feeds and 19 goal assists.

Both teams exchanged goals in the first three quarters, but the Swifts managed to take a one-point lead at three-quarter time after a strong run in the third period. The lead changed hands several times in the final quarter, but the Mavericks remained composed and ultimately secured the win.

This victory highlights the resilience and determination of the Melbourne Mavericks, who continue to show promise in their quest for a top-four finish in the Super Netball league.
