Melbourne Mavericks Secure Crucial Victory Over Sunshine Coast Lightning
In a thrilling display of skill and strategy, the Melbourne Mavericks secured a vital 63-53 victory over the Sunshine Coast Lightning. This win not only strengthens their position in the Super Netball finals race but also significantly impacts the Lightning’s chances of securing a top-four finish.
The Mavericks demonstrated a powerful second half, with a 36-24 lead and a decisive 19-12 fourth quarter. The game took place at the John Cain Arena on Saturday night, where the Mavericks (6-5) climbed into third place on the ladder, creating a gap from the fifth-ranked Lightning (4-7).
One of the standout performers for the Mavericks was creative wing attack Maddie Hay, who recorded an impressive 33 assists. Most of these were directed towards Shimona Nelson, who scored an incredible 56 goals.

Hay expressed her enthusiasm about playing with her teammates, stating, “It’s a really fun line-up to play with. All the shooters are amazing – ‘Shimmy’ (Shimona Nelson) is so fun to feed. We have to win these games if we want to be good in finals.”
The match started with the Mavericks taking an early lead, jumping ahead 6-2. However, the Lightning soon found their rhythm, closing the gap to 14-13 by the end of the first quarter. The partnership between Hay and Nelson proved to be a key factor throughout the game, while Liz Watson, the star midcourter for the Lightning, contributed eight assists but also had three uncharacteristic turnovers.
The second quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, with both teams scoring goal-for-goal. However, the Lightning managed to gain an edge late in the quarter. They increased their defensive pressure, resulting in five of the last six scores for the term. Cara Koenen’s goal just before the halftime siren helped the Lightning take a narrow 29-27 lead at halftime.

After a closely contested first half, Nelson began to dominate the Lightning’s stopper, Courtney Bruce, while Hay and Jamie-Lee Price controlled the middle of the court. This led to a 17-12 third-quarter advantage for the Mavericks, putting them ahead 44-41 at three-quarter time.
The Lightning faced concerns when goal shooter Donnell Wallam (31 goals) started the fourth quarter on the bench with her right knee strapped. She eventually returned to the court mid-quarter, but her presence could not halt the Mavericks’ momentum. The home side, driven by Hay and Nelson, continued to dictate the game’s pace in the final quarter.
This victory highlights the Mavericks’ growing strength and determination as they aim for success in the upcoming finals. With key players performing at their best, the team is well-positioned to make a strong impact in the remaining matches of the season.
