Sir Paul McCartney Reflects on “Overbearing” Persona and Beatles Breakup
Legendary musician Sir Paul McCartney has opened up about his role in The Beatles’ eventual split, admitting he “bought into” the criticism that he was overbearing. The 83-year-old music icon, who recently released a new Prime Video documentary, Paul McCartney: Man on the Run, discussed his feelings about public perception and criticism in an interview with the film’s director, Morgan Neville.
The documentary delves into McCartney’s life in the aftermath of The Beatles’ dissolution and his subsequent career as a solo artist and with his band, Wings. Reflecting on his journey, McCartney stated, “Whenever I hear someone damning Paul McCartney, I tend to agree with them.” He further elaborated, “So when everyone was saying I broke up the Beatles, and I was just overbearing and all of that, I kind of bought into it.”

This candid admission comes as McCartney has shown a deeply emotional side when discussing the documentary. During a screening in London earlier this year, he confessed to feeling “emotional” upon seeing his late wife, Linda McCartney, featured in the film. Linda, who passed away in 1998, was the mother of four of Sir Paul’s children: Heather (adopted, 63), Mary (56), Stella (53), and James (48).
McCartney explained that revisiting these memories with Linda, their children, and his bandmates, particularly John Lennon, has been a profound experience. “Seeing me and Linda interacting is very special because, you know, she is not here anymore,” he shared. “Me and Linda, the kids. The music. Me and John [Lennon]. These memories, it is like a life flashing in front of you.” Despite acknowledging some “embarrassing moments,” he emerged from the viewing with a sense of peace, concluding, “Yeah, I’m OK.” He added, “All the stuff with the kids and Linda is lovely to see. Obviously, it’s emotional because she looks so beautiful. She’s so cool.”
New Beatles Biopics Take Shape with Star-Studded Cast
In related news, the world of The Beatles is buzzing with anticipation for a new series of ambitious biographical films helmed by director Sir Sam Mendes. Earlier this year, fans were treated to a first look at the principal cast members, including Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Joseph Quinn, and Harris Dickinson, who are set to portray the Fab Four.
These four upcoming films will chart the pioneering group’s meteoric rise from Liverpool’s vibrant club scene to global superstardom and their status as the most influential band on the planet. While there has been some debate surrounding the casting choices, initial images suggest the projects are in capable hands.
The Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts (LIPA), co-founded by McCartney in 1996, has shared exclusive postcards of the actors on set, allowing fans to form their own opinions.
- Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney: One striking image features Mescal as a young McCartney, with the iconic brickwork of Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club visible in the background. McCartney and his bandmates honed their craft at the Cavern Club in the early 1960s, a period that also led to their discovery by manager Brian Epstein.
- Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr: Keoghan is depicted as Ringo, sporting a black and white spotted shirt, a psychedelic tie, and headphones around his neck. This look is reminiscent of Ringo’s style during the late 1960s, particularly during the recording of the self-titled 1968 album, often referred to as the ‘White Album’. The actor’s resemblance to the drummer is notable, including a hairstyle that echoes Ringo’s signature ‘moptop’.
- Joseph Quinn as George Harrison: Quinn appears in a portrayal of a bearded Harrison, suggesting his role will cover the later stages of the band’s career.
- Harris Dickinson as John Lennon: Dickinson is seen in an iconic denim jacket and round spectacles, a look favoured by John Lennon in 1968.

LIPA shared these images on Instagram, captioning the post: “We’ve been given exclusive postcards promoting the new Beatles movies! We’ve hidden them around LIPA, and we want students to find them.”
Supporting Cast and Production Details
The ensemble cast for these highly anticipated films, confirmed by Sony last year after months of speculation, will also include:
- Aimee Lou Wood (White Lotus) as Pattie Boyd, Harrison’s wife.
- Saoirse Ronan (Irish Oscar nominee) as Linda McCartney, a significant muse for McCartney’s songwriting.
- Anna Sawai (Shogun) as Yoko Ono, Lennon’s wife.
- Mia McKenna-Bruce (British actress) as Maureen Cox, Ringo Starr’s wife.
Production for the Beatles biopics is reportedly underway at the renowned Abbey Road Studios in London, with filming having commenced last November. The four films are slated for release in April 2028.
