Melania Trump’s Inaugural Gown Joins Historic First Ladies Collection
Melania Trump has marked another significant milestone in her tenure as First Lady, donating her eye-catching inaugural ball gown to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History. This marks the second gown she has entrusted to the esteemed First Ladies Collection, following the earlier donation of her 2017 inaugural gown.
The ceremony, held on a Friday, continued a time-honoured tradition where First Ladies preserve their inaugural attire for posterity. Mrs. Trump presented a strapless sheath gown, distinguished by its elegant black trim, along with a striking black neckpiece. This neckpiece was adorned with a reproduction of a Harry Winston diamond brooch, a piece she famously wore on the night of January 20, 2025. The complete ensemble was showcased on a mannequin during the presentation.
During a brief address, Mrs. Trump spoke eloquently about the gown, delving into its symbolic significance and her profound appreciation for fashion design. She described the garment as far more than just a dress, articulating its deeper meaning.
“This is more than 50 years of education, experience, and wisdom realized with each thread, each stitch, each sharp edge,” she remarked.
She further elaborated on the intricate details of the gown, highlighting the meticulously crafted black ‘Z’ shape on the front bodice. “The meticulously formed black shape ‘Z’ on the front bodice summons decades of my early memories, life experiences, and influences. And, all of these stories are tucked deep within its crisp, strong seams — forever.”
As a former fashion model, Mrs. Trump views fashion design as a powerful form of creative expression. She noted that the contrasting black and white palette of the gown was deliberately chosen to “set a mood rich with emotion.”

“This dress speaks with a distinct point of view, a modern silhouette, bold and dignified, and ruthlessly chic,” she stated, underscoring the gown’s sophisticated and assertive aesthetic.
Following a brief program, the mannequin bearing the gown was moved to its permanent exhibition space. It now joins more than two dozen other inaugural gowns, each representing a unique chapter in American history and the lives of its First Ladies.
Melania Trump, accompanied by her long-time stylist and the designer of both her donated gowns, Herve Pierre, expressed her awe at seeing the gown displayed. “It’s incredible. It’s a historic moment,” she shared with reporters when asked about her feelings.
The museum was preparing to reopen its doors to the public on Friday afternoon, allowing visitors to experience this latest addition to the prestigious collection. The donation serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of First Ladies and their contributions to both fashion and American history. The gown, with its personal symbolism and modern design, is now a tangible piece of that rich narrative, preserved for generations to come.
