Reece Walsh Set for Return as Broncos Build Momentum
Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has confirmed that fullback Reece Walsh has successfully completed the captain’s run and is set to make his return on Friday night following a cheekbone fracture. The news comes as a significant boost for the club, with Walsh expected to reclaim his fullback position for the QLD Maroons ahead of the State of Origin series.
Maguire expressed confidence in Walsh’s readiness, stating that the Clive Churchill winner will be a strong contender for the fullback jersey in the upcoming series. Walsh’s return is particularly timely, as he now has three games to impress Queensland coach Billy Slater before the final team selection for Game 1.
Walsh received clearance from surgeons to return to the field two weeks earlier than initially expected, which has allowed him to join a revitalized Broncos squad that is gradually regaining its strength. His presence on the field will not only help the team but also provide valuable match fitness as he aims to secure a spot in the Origin team.
The battle for the fullback position will be intense when the Broncos face the Sydney Roosters in Sydney. Walsh will go head-to-head with James Tedesco, with both players vying for their respective Origin positions. Maguire emphasized that Walsh is definitely ready for Origin again, adding that he would personally choose “Reecey” as Queensland’s fullback if given the chance.
Walsh sustained the cheekbone injury while defending against the Gold Coast Titans in round five and has been sidelined since. During this time, he was also seen in hospital with a serious gash on his foot, although this did not affect his recovery timeline from the cheekbone injury.
Despite these setbacks, Walsh is eager to return to action and is determined to build up his match fitness to earn a spot in the Origin team. Maguire has dismissed concerns about rushing Walsh back, noting that the player wanted to return last week and is enjoying playing with his teammates. He added that Walsh has met all the medical requirements and is fully prepared to play.
Corey Paix Also Earns Praise
In addition to Walsh, Maguire praised recently extended hooker Corey Paix, who he believes would excel in the Origin arena if given the opportunity. Maguire highlighted that Paix is a hard-working player who may not receive as much attention as other stars in the team, but he is capable of making a significant impact in the high-stakes environment of Origin.
“There’s no reason he can’t take another step (in Origin),” Maguire said, emphasizing Paix’s potential.
Broncos’ ‘Next Man Up’ Mentality
Despite a challenging month marked by several injuries, the Broncos have developed a strong “next man up” mentality within the team. This approach has helped them win their past two games in impressive fashion. With Patrick Carrigan returning from suspension and young talent Aublix Tawha coming back from facial fractures, the team is gaining momentum at a crucial time of the season.
The NSW Blues will host the QLD Maroons for Game 1 at Accor Stadium on May 27, setting the stage for an exciting showdown between the two states. As the Origin period approaches, the focus will remain on key players like Walsh and Paix, who are looking to make their mark on the biggest stage in Australian rugby league.
