More Broncos chaos as front-rower ruled out

Brisbane Faces Major Setback in Forward Pack

Brisbane have faced another significant setback in their forward pack, with prop Jack Gosiewski ruled out of their upcoming blockbuster match against the Warriors due to a concussion. Gosiewski was forced to leave the field late in the Broncos’ 32-4 loss to Manly at Brookvale on Saturday night. It is reported that his head injury was classified as a category one, which means he will now enter the NRL’s concussion protocols.

This ruling means Gosiewski will be unavailable for the Magic Round and the highly anticipated clash against the Warriors. The Broncos are hoping to get halfback Adam Reynolds back for this match, but the defending premiers are still struggling with a lack of available players.

Gosiewski joins several other forwards on the sidelines, including Payne Haas, Corey Jensen, Brendan Piakura, Blake Mozer, and Billy Walters. Prop Ben Te Kura is also unavailable as he is attending a six-week NFL training camp in the USA. None of these players are expected to return next week, adding to the team’s challenges.

Additionally, Brisbane is still without suspended centre Kotoni Staggs, along with injured backs Grant Anderson, Delouise Hoeter, and Deine Mariner. This extensive list of absences has left the team in a difficult position as they try to recover from their recent performance.

Poor Performance Against Manly

Saturday night’s defeat at the hands of Manly was the Broncos’ worst performance of the year, especially considering they had been performing well despite missing several key players in recent weeks. The team struggled throughout the match, often turning over the ball and completing less than 50% of their passes in the second half. This led to them losing good field position and failing to create scoring opportunities.

The game was set up by a glaring gap in the Broncos’ defense that allowed Manly’s first try through Joey Walsh. Throughout the 80 minutes, Brisbane managed only one linebreak, highlighting their struggles in attack.

Coach’s Response to the Defeat

After the match, coach Michael Maguire refused to use the injury toll as an excuse for the loss, which has seen the Broncos drop to 11th on the ladder. “That’s not an excuse,” Maguire stated. “We missed the mark. It’s as simple as that.”

He pointed out that the team had previously performed well despite missing several stars, such as in their matches against the Tigers and Canterbury. “That’s the expectation that the players have,” he added.

Manly’s Injury Concerns

Meanwhile, Manly are also facing their own injury issues. Hooker Brandon Wakeham is set to miss their Magic Round clash with Wests Tigers after being sent to the sin-bin in the first half. He has been charged for a high shot on Brisbane prop Ben Talty and could face a one-match ban. If he fights the charge and loses at the judiciary, he may receive a two-game suspension.
