Nadiya Hussain Quits Teaching Post After Showbiz Exit

Nadiya Hussain Steps Away from Teaching Role Amid Health Concerns

Nadiya Hussain, the beloved Great British Bake Off champion, has announced she is stepping down from her role as a teaching assistant, just days after expressing her aspirations to build a career in education. This decision comes after a period of reflection and a desire to pivot away from the pressures of the entertainment industry.

The 41-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most successful contestants to emerge from the Bake Off tent, had recently taken up a position as a teaching assistant. This move followed the BBC’s decision not to recommission one of her cookery shows, a development that left her feeling at a “lowest ebb” despite the perceived height of her showbiz career. At the time, Nadiya had indicated a strong interest in pursuing a future in teaching, but it now appears her path has taken another turn.

In an open and emotional social media post, Nadiya described feeling at a significant crossroads in her life. “When the BBC cancelled my show, I was kind of at a crossroads, I wasn’t sure where I was going, what I wanted to do,” she shared. She revealed that she had explored various options, including opening a business or setting up a pop-up restaurant, but none of these ventures felt right at that moment.

“I’m still obviously publishing books, cookbooks which I will always love,” she continued, “but I kind of reluctantly, you know I was scared, really scared to apply for jobs.”

Teaching, however, presented itself as a more natural and fulfilling path. Nadiya has long harboured a desire to work with younger children as a teaching assistant. “I’ve always wanted to work with children in younger years as a teaching assistant,” she explained. Applying for such roles was a challenging process for various reasons, but she eventually secured a position at a primary school.

“I’ve got to say, apart from raising my own children, it was one of the best jobs I’ve ever done,” Nadiya enthused. “I loved every second of waking up in the morning with a spring in my step for these beautiful children. I just loved every second of doing that job.”

Unfortunately, the demanding nature of a school environment, with its inevitable spread of coughs and colds, proved to be a significant challenge for Nadiya, who lives with fibromyalgia. Her weakened immune system struggled to cope with the constant exposure to illness.

“So, I was sick all the time, and it got to the point where it was affecting my mental health, and I just wasn’t performing, giving my best because I was always sick,” she revealed. This persistent ill health led to a difficult but necessary decision.

“I had to make a really tough decision, one of the toughest I’ve ever had to make, was stepping away from that job.” Nadiya stressed that she “loved every minute” of her time as a teaching assistant, but her health ultimately necessitated her departure.

Nadiya has previously spoken about the public’s perception of her career choices. In an interview with Woman and Home, she addressed questions about why she would seemingly step away from a high-profile career for a more conventional one. She explained that she doesn’t equate fame with happiness, stating, “There have been lots of tears, sadness and judgment. People have said, ‘Why would you want to go from here, right at the top to being at the bottom?’ But I don’t see it that way. Just because I’m famous doesn’t mean I’m at the top. I have been at my lowest ebb at the top.”

She further elaborated, “So what does being at the top really mean? Since working at the school, I’ve had some of my highest moments.”

Regarding the BBC’s decision not to continue with her cookery show, Nadiya admitted she still doesn’t fully understand the reasoning, as no direct conversation about not being recommissioned took place. A statement from the BBC confirmed their decision: “After several wonderful series, we have made the difficult decision not to commission another cookery show with Nadiya Hussain at the moment. Nadiya remains a much-valued part of the BBC family, and we look forward to working together on future projects.”

Nadiya’s journey highlights the complexities of balancing a public career with personal well-being and the pursuit of genuine fulfillment, proving that success can be redefined beyond the glare of the spotlight.
