Netflix’s ‘His & Hers’: The Killer Revealed

The gripping murder mystery series, His & Hers, recently landed on Netflix, unravelling a complex web of deceit and unexpected turns that left audiences questioning the killer’s identity and how it compared to Alice Feeney’s original novel. The show, which premiered on January 8, centres on estranged couple Anna Andrews, a journalist, and detective Jack Harper. They are drawn back to their hometown in Georgia to investigate a series of murders that are targeting their former high school classmates.

The Core Mystery: Who is the Killer?

At the heart of the narrative lies the burning question: who is responsible for the spate of killings? Early suspicions fell upon Lexy Jones, a former high school classmate and now a TV anchor. Both Anna and Jack initially believed Lexy, once an unpopular figure, was the culprit. However, their suspicions were dramatically challenged when Anna narrowly escaped Lexy’s clutches, suggesting a more sinister truth lay hidden.

A Shocking Confession and a Mother’s Love

A significant plot twist arrived with a one-year time jump. In a revealing letter, Anna’s mother, Alice, confessed to the murders. Alice disclosed that she had systematically killed Anna’s former classmates. Her motive, as revealed in the letter, stemmed from a perceived betrayal: Rachel Hopkins was killed for allegedly sleeping with Jack. The subsequent victims were Helen and Zoe, with Alice ultimately framing Lexy for her heinous crimes.

The revelation that Alice was the killer sent shockwaves through the cast and viewers alike. Jon Bernthal, who plays Jack Harper, admitted to Tudum that he had considered the possibility of Anna being the killer as more murders occurred. “Once the other murders happen … I thought it was possible that Anna could have been the killer,” he shared, reflecting on the disorienting nature of the show’s conclusion.

Tessa Thompson, portraying Anna, expressed her own surprise. “I never suspected Alice. There’s so much happening all at once,” she commented, highlighting the intricate layering of the plot.

Adaptation and Artistic Vision

Executive producer William Oldroyd, who adapted Feeney’s novel for the screen, managed to retain most of the key elements from the book while crafting a compelling visual narrative. Oldroyd was particularly impressed by the novel’s twist, stating, “Because I had not seen that twist coming. And I feel I’m pretty good at being able to tell what the twists and turns will be.”

He continued, “To encounter a twist like that and then for it to be totally believable and merited and moving? I thought that was worth exploring as a TV series.”

Oldroyd also described His & Hers as a “love letter” to the support he received from his own mother. He believed Alice’s motivations and actions, though violent, were understandable and rooted in a fierce maternal love. “I feel like not only were Alice’s motives and actions justified, but that this idea of a mother’s love — everyone will understand and hopefully support her,” he explained.

The Nuances of Maternal Protection

The series concludes with a powerful and poignant exchange between Anna and Alice. In the final moments, Anna and her mother share a knowing look, signifying Anna’s dawning comprehension of her mother’s complex and deeply rooted motivations.

“It’s triumphant in some crazy, messed-up way. It’s also harrowing and twisted,” Thompson reflected on the ending. “It’s grounded in this mother’s profound love for her daughter. What women are capable of [doing] to protect their children is tremendous.”

Thompson further elaborated on the thematic core of the series: “Obviously, this is an expanded version of that phenomenon, but I do love that the story is grounded in this mother’s searing love that makes her capable of violence.” The series masterfully explores the extreme lengths to which maternal love can drive individuals, blurring the lines between protection and pathology.

His & Hers is currently available for streaming on Netflix, offering a compelling and thought-provoking examination of family, loyalty, and the dark undercurrents of love.
