Neto Hat-Trick Powers Chelsea to Dominant FA Cup Victory Over Hull
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior enjoyed a triumphant return to his former club Hull, as his side secured a commanding 4-0 victory in the FA Cup fourth round. The standout performance came from winger Pedro Neto, who netted a spectacular hat-trick to seal the Londoners’ progression into the last 16 of the prestigious competition.
The encounter, held at the MKM Stadium, marked an emotional homecoming for Rosenior, who previously served as both a player and manager for the Tigers. His reign as Chelsea manager, which commenced in January with a resounding 5-1 away win against Charlton, has been largely successful. Aside from a League Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal, Rosenior has overseen an impressive run of eight wins and one draw in his other nine fixtures across all competitions.

Chelsea, who recently dropped points in a 2-2 draw at home to Leeds, hindering their Premier League top-four aspirations, made seven alterations to their starting lineup. Meanwhile, Hull, currently fourth in the Championship and firmly in the promotion hunt, also rotated their squad, with manager Sergej Jakirovic making six changes.
Despite the changes, Chelsea’s attacking intent was evident from the early stages. In the 10th minute, Alejandro Garnacho found himself clear on goal after a well-placed through-ball from Moises Caicedo. However, Hull’s goalkeeper Dillon Phillips, one of Jakirovic’s changes, produced a crucial save to deny the striker. John Egan was then on hand to block the rebound, preventing Pedro Neto from finding the back of the net.
The visitors continued to spurn early opportunities. Neto had already fired an effort off target from inside the penalty area. The attacking pressure mounted in the 16th minute when Estevao rounded Phillips, only to uncharacteristically skew his shot over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy. Liam Delap, a former Hull loanee, also missed a golden chance. After charging down Phillips’ clearance, the ball ricocheted off the crossbar. Delap inexplicably hesitated as he attempted to convert the rebound, allowing Hull’s defence to block his attempt.
Hull’s most significant threat of the match came from a Ryan Giles free-kick from 20 yards, which forced a sprawling save from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Just five minutes before the halftime interval, when it seemed Hull would head into the break on level terms, Pedro Neto broke the deadlock. After a neat setup from Delap, Neto expertly created space on the edge of the area and unleashed a superb shot that found the bottom corner, giving Chelsea a crucial lead.
The second half saw Chelsea extend their advantage early on. While Phillips initially made a brilliant save from Andrey Santos’ header, he was then caught out by Neto’s subsequent corner. The ball appeared to slip through his legs and trickled directly into the net.
Estevao and Neto Seal the Deal
Estevao then added Chelsea’s third goal eight minutes later, drilling home a low shot following another corner. With 19 minutes left on the clock, Pedro Neto completed his memorable hat-trick, tapping home from inside the area after another assist from Delap. This strike marked Neto’s 10th goal of the season across all competitions, capping off a stellar individual performance.
In the closing stages of the match, Chelsea handed a debut to youngster Jesse Derry, the son of former Crystal Palace and Leeds midfielder Shaun Derry. Hull came close to a late consolation when Lewis Koumas’ low shot struck the post, but it was to be their only significant chance as Chelsea comfortably saw out the victory.
The result ensures Chelsea’s name will be in the hat for the FA Cup fifth round draw, extending Liam Rosenior’s positive start to his tenure at the club. The performance will undoubtedly boost confidence as they look to maintain their strong form across all competitions.
