Toyota Australia has long been known for its reliable vehicles, but in recent years, the brand has had to contend with another challenge – long wait times for popular models. This issue became particularly pronounced after supply chain disruptions during the early 2020s lockdowns, which led to extended waiting periods for some of Toyota’s most sought-after cars.
With the launch of the new generation Toyota RAV4, many customers are wondering whether these wait times will improve. John Pappas, Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, recently addressed this concern, offering insights into what buyers can expect.
Lead Times for the New RAV4
According to Pappas, lead times for the RAV4 are expected to be within three to six months. “On average, across our range for RAV4, the lead times will be within three to six months,” he said. “And we obviously, together with our dealers, communicate that when we’re taking any of the orders for our customers.”
He noted that while a six-month wait might seem lengthy, it is typically only those with specific preferences who end up waiting longer. “I think for us a lead time is always going to differ a little bit whether it’s going to be a one month versus a three month depending on, you know, the grade, the colour, the spec.”
A Broader Range of Options
The RAV4 lineup has become more diverse in recent years, thanks to the introduction of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) drivetrain and a range of trims featuring either two-wheel or all-wheel drive. Pappas believes this expanded selection will help reduce wait times for customers looking for more standard versions of the RAV4.
“This means anyone looking for a bit more out of the RAV4 will have an option thanks to the introduction of the more powerful GR Sport model that will sit atop the range,” he explained.
The GR Sport Model
The GR Sport model is designed to appeal to customers seeking a more sporty and aggressive look. “The reason why we’ve done that is because, on the strength of RAV now becoming an icon in Australia since 1994, six generations, and it’s so popular that we’ve taken all that sort of customer feedback, and that’s why now… when you look at the range, we’ve got the plug-in coming now with a new halo vehicle, GR Sport, because we want something more sporty, more aggressive at that top end, with more power.”
Pappas also mentioned that the positioning of the Edge model has changed compared to previous iterations. “And then you can look at where the Edge sits now versus where it used to sit. So we’ve strategically done that based on meeting customer requirements.”
Key Features of the 2026 RAV4
Despite being one of the most popular family cars in Australia, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 does not yet have an ANCAP safety rating. However, safety remains a top priority for the brand. The new model introduces several features aimed at enhancing driver and passenger protection, including advanced driver assistance systems and improved structural integrity.
Additionally, the 2026 RAV4 is set to make a significant impact in the Australian market. Analysts suggest that it could play a crucial role in Japan’s efforts to regain dominance in new-car sales against Chinese competitors.
What to Expect
For customers considering the new RAV4, there are several factors to consider:

- Variety of Options: The expanded range includes different drivetrains and trims, allowing buyers to choose based on their needs and preferences.
- Performance Upgrades: The GR Sport model offers enhanced performance and a more dynamic driving experience.
