No surprise: Former Bulldog set for AFL comeback

A New Chapter for Charlie Clarke

Ex-Western Bulldogs forward Charlie Clarke is currently making a name for himself in the VFL while playing for Port Melbourne. His performances have caught the attention of AFL scouts, and there’s growing speculation about a potential return to the top-tier competition.

Clarke’s former teammate at the Borough, Dyson Heppell, has been closely watching his development and believes that a return to the AFL is not out of the question. Heppell shared his thoughts with Zero Hanger, highlighting Clarke’s talent and dedication.

“He’s got a whole heap of talent,” Heppell said. “He’s put a lot of work physically to get himself in really good order throughout the course of the pre-season just gone and ended up just smashing the 2km time trial that we did. He’s got himself in ripping nick and playing some great footy. So I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him back on an AFL list in the mid-season draft or towards the back end of the year.”

Clarke’s Journey with the Borough

Clarke joined the Borough ahead of the 2025 season, and in just 15 games for the club, he has already made a significant impact. He has kicked 19 goals and consistently found the ball in the front half, showcasing his ability to contribute effectively in key positions.

Before joining the Borough, Clarke spent two years at the Western Bulldogs. However, his time at the club was limited, as he only played one game in the tri colours during 2024 before being delisted. This setback has now turned into an opportunity for him to rebuild his career and prove his worth in the VFL.

Potential AFL Clubs Interested

With several clubs having available list spots in the upcoming mid-season draft, there are multiple opportunities for Clarke to make a move. West Coast and Port Adelaide both have a pair of vacancies at the club, while Adelaide, Collingwood, Hawthorn, St Kilda, and GWS have flexibility in their rosters.

The Power have been actively seeking more small forwards, and previously considered former Pie Jaidyn Stephenson before deciding not to select him in the pre-season. The Eagles, on the other hand, have been looking for mature-age talent and have signed a trio of midfielders as rookies. However, they could still look to bolster their front half with a pressure forward.

Melbourne may also open up two spots in the mid-season draft, as veteran ruckman Tom Campbell is considering retirement and Jai Culley has torn his ACL. The Giants have a history of attracting players seeking a second chance at AFL football, and given their desire to add speed to their list, they could consider Clarke as a potential option.

Key Factors for Clarke’s Return

For Clarke, the key factors in securing a spot in the AFL will be his continued performance in the VFL, his physical conditioning, and the interest from various clubs. With the right support and opportunities, he has the potential to make a strong case for a recall to the big league.

As the mid-season draft approaches, all eyes will be on Clarke and how he continues to perform. His journey serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination required to succeed in the competitive world of Australian Rules football.
