NRL chaos: Panthers and Broncos stars banned, 16 injured, season in ruins

A Week of Chaos in the NRL: Injuries, Suspensions, and Big Implications

The National Rugby League (NRL) has once again seen a wave of chaos in Round 9, with major consequences for both the State of Origin series and the premiership race. The week saw an alarming number of injuries, with 16 players sidelined, and several suspensions handed down by the match review committee.

Among the most notable suspensions was that of Broncos centre Kotoni Staggs, who received a two-game ban. Meanwhile, Panthers utility Jack Cogger was suspended for one game after being sin-binned during a match against Manly. Cogger will face the Round 10 game against Canberra if he accepts the early guilty plea.

Injuries Hit Broncos and Wests Tigers Hard

The Broncos and Wests Tigers were hit particularly hard on the injury front. Deine Mariner and Josiah Karapani joined an already overcrowded injury ward. Mariner had to undergo surgery for ‘compartment syndrome’ after sustaining a severe thigh injury during a match.

NRL physio Brien Seeney explained that compartment syndrome involves a build-up of blood that can crush nerves and blood vessels, cutting off supply to a muscle. He noted that recovery time can vary but is likely between 4-8 weeks.

Karapani suffered an ankle injury after his foot twisted under a tackle from Victor Radley, which went unpunished. Seeney said it could be a “moderate to high grade sprain” requiring several weeks of recovery, with the common range being 3-8 weeks.

In addition, Adam Reynolds suffered a category 1 head knock and will miss next week’s game against Manly. Reynolds, along with Staggs, Karapani, and Mariner, joins a long list of unavailable Broncos players, including Payne Haas, Ben Hunt, Corey Jensen, Blake Mozer, Delouise Hoeter, Ben Te Kura, Brendan Piakura, and Billy Walters.

Tigers Suffer Major Setbacks

For the Wests Tigers, Adam Doueihi and Samuela Fainu are also out with injuries. Doueihi only lasted 11 minutes against the Sharks after injuring his shoulder while scoring a try. Fainu was carried off in the final minutes with a minor foot injury.

Both players had been in strong form and were considered for State of Origin selection. However, they are now expected to miss several weeks. If Doueihi requires surgery, he could be out for 3-5 months, a significant blow to the Tigers’ premiership hopes.

The Tigers have also been ruled out of the premiership race after conceding 52 points in their latest match. Historically, no team has won the competition after conceding 50 points in a season. They join the Eels, Titans, Dragons, Dolphins, and Storm as teams that have conceded 50 or more points this year.

Other Players Affected

Doueihi and Fainu aren’t the only Origin hopefuls to suffer injuries in Round 9. Mark Nawaqanitawase and Jeremiah Nanai sustained ankle and shoulder injuries that will keep them out of Game 1 at the least. NSW forward Angus Crichton suffered a knee injury, though the Roosters believe it isn’t too severe.

Other players affected include:

  • Kurt Mann (Bulldogs) – concussion
  • Jake Turpin (Bulldogs) – biceps
  • Jeremiah Nanai (Cowboys) – shoulder
  • Ryley Smith (Eels) – sternum
  • Jack Wighton (Rabbitohs) – arm
