Peter FitzSimons highlights ‘alarming’ NRL issues as Origin star stumbles

Controversial Moments and Player Performances in Roosters’ NRL Victory

Brisbane Broncos fans were left frustrated during the Roosters’ intense NRL match on Saturday night, as Victor Radley avoided being sent to the sin bin on two separate occasions. This came as Spencer Leniu delivered a disappointing performance ahead of the State of Origin selection.

The Roosters secured a 38-24 victory over the Broncos at Allianz Stadium, but the game was marred by several injuries. Players such as Mark Nawaqanitawase, Angus Crichton, Lindsay Collins, Adam Reynolds, Josiah Karapani, and Deine Mariner all failed to finish the match.

The match was played with high intensity, and Radley was a central figure, showcasing his usual aggression that helped the Roosters take an early lead. However, many fans felt he was fortunate to avoid punishment for multiple controversial challenges.

One such incident involved a tackle on Broncos forward Patrick Carrigan. Radley rushed out of the line and appeared to deliver a bone-crushing tackle on the Queensland lock. The Roosters were awarded the ball for a knock-on, but replays revealed Radley led with his head and struck Carrigan on the chin.

This tackle was deemed reckless, and even former rugby union player Peter FitzSimons described it as “alarming” that Radley remained on the field. Many were also surprised that the Bunker did not intervene after the replays showed contact to the head. Radley was not finished with controversy, as he was put on report for a hip-drop tackle on Karapani. The Broncos winger left the field due to an ankle injury and did not return.

Players who have been penalized for similar tackles this season often face 10-minute suspensions. Despite this, Radley continued playing. This decision sparked frustration among Broncos fans, especially considering that players like Ryan Couchman, Mitch Kenny, and Api Koroisau have been sent to the sin bin for similar actions this year.

Spencer Leniu’s Concerning Performance Ahead of Origin

Spencer Leniu’s lackluster display raised concerns ahead of the State of Origin selection. NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley will announce his team in just over two weeks, with the extended bench offering several players an opportunity to earn a spot. However, Leniu appears to be on the outside looking in after another underwhelming performance.

Leniu only played 14 minutes in the match, making one run for five metres and completing just three tackles. Since his return to the Roosters side this season, he has been on the periphery of the team. Other stars have stepped up in his absence, and with Lindsay Collins’ injury, many expected Leniu to receive more playing time. Instead, Nat Butcher played for 54 minutes, suggesting that Leniu is slipping down the pecking order within the club.

This poor form is likely to affect Daley’s selection, as he may opt for players in better shape. Names like Jackson Ford are gaining attention, and they could demand a spot in the NSW Blues squad.
