Postecoglou: Forest Stint a Costly Mistake

Ange Postecoglou Reflects on Nottingham Forest Stint: “A Bad Decision”

Australian football icon Ange Postecoglou has opened up about his brief and ultimately unsuccessful tenure at Nottingham Forest, admitting that taking the managerial role was a significant misstep. The seasoned coach, who had recently parted ways with Tottenham Hotspur, found himself at the helm of the Midlands club for a mere 39 days. The decision to accept the position, he revealed on the “Stick To Football” podcast, stemmed from a disorienting period of unemployment.

“It was the first time in 20-odd years that I wasn’t working. I was lost,” Postecoglou confessed. “In the off-season, I was so lost. Usually you would go away with your family, but there are transfers and pre-season ahead, so your mind is on that. I was lost.” This feeling of disorientation, he explained, contributed to him accepting the Forest job prematurely.

Postecoglou stepped into a challenging environment at Nottingham Forest, a club grappling with the sudden resignation of their previous manager, Nuno Espirito Santo. Reflecting on the situation, the 60-year-old was candid about his own role in the outcome. “That was on me, the whole Forest thing,” he stated. “That was a bad decision by me to go in there. But there is no point in me blaming it on not getting time or anything. I should never have gone in there.”

He elaborated on the timing of the appointment, noting that it was “too soon after Tottenham.” Furthermore, Postecoglou highlighted a clash of philosophies and operational styles. “I was taking over at a time where, obviously, I wanted to do things differently. They were kind of used to doing things in a certain way. I have to cop that — that was my mistake.”

The Allure of the City Ground

Despite the eventual disappointment, Postecoglou admitted that he saw genuine potential in the Nottingham Forest squad. The presence of several talented players within their Premier League lineup was a significant draw. “That was the only reason that sucked me in,” he explained. The prospect of competing in European football also played a part in his decision-making. “They (Nottingham Forest) were also in Europe in the Europa League, and I wouldn’t have minded another crack at that,” Postecoglou added, hinting at his ambition to once again test his mettle on the continental stage.

The recent fortunes of both Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur offer a stark contrast to the current leading pack in the Premier League. Both clubs, where Postecoglou has recently managed, find themselves precariously positioned near the relegation zone. This season, both teams have managed to secure victory on only seven occasions. The current league standings see Arsenal leading the charge, followed closely by Manchester City and last year’s champions, Liverpool. The competitive landscape of the top flight continues to highlight the demanding nature of managing in England’s premier football competition.
