Hogwarts Welcomes New Faces: The Golden Trio Revealed for the Highly Anticipated Harry Potter Series
The wizarding world is abuzz with excitement as HBO continues to unveil the cast for its ambitious new Harry Potter series. After months of carefully curated casting announcements, including the much-talked-about choices of John Lithgow as the wise Albus Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu stepping into the formidable shoes of Severus Snape, the spotlight has finally landed on the heart of the story: the Golden Trio. Young talents Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton have been selected to embody the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, respectively.
The journey to find these three pivotal actors was reportedly a monumental undertaking. Producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod shared that the selection process involved sifting through “tens of thousands” of aspiring young actors. In a statement, they expressed their awe at the calibre of talent discovered: “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”
Meet the New Harry Potter
Dominic McLaughlin, a Scottish actor new to the screen, is set to make his grand debut as the Boy Who Lived. Before he dons the Gryffindor colours, McLaughlin will be seen in a BBC adaptation of Marilyn Kaye’s novel, Gifted, and the series Grow in 2025. Interestingly, Grow also features fellow Harry Potter series cast member Nick Frost. The iconic role of Harry Potter was famously brought to life by Daniel Radcliffe in the original film franchise.
Hermione Granger: A New Era
Arabella Stanton will be taking on the role of the brilliant and resourceful Hermione Granger. Stanton has already showcased her acting prowess on the stage, having starred as Matilda in the West End production of Matilda The Musical and graced the boards in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Starlight Express. She now inherits the role previously portrayed by Emma Watson in the beloved film series.

Ron Weasley Completes the Trio
Rounding out the legendary Golden Trio is Alastair Stout, who will be portraying the loyal and often humorous Ron Weasley. Like his co-stars, Stout is a newcomer to the screen, ready to embark on this magical adventure. The role of Harry’s steadfast best friend was originally filled by Rupert Grint in the films.

A Stellar Supporting Cast Assembles
Beyond the central trio, HBO has assembled an impressive ensemble of seasoned actors to bring the world of Hogwarts to life. The series promises a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novels, with plans for multiple seasons, potentially dedicating more than one season to each book. The premiere is slated for 2026.
Albus Dumbledore: A Legend Takes the Helm

John Lithgow, a veteran actor with an illustrious career, will step into the role of Albus Dumbledore. At 79, Lithgow becomes the fifth actor to portray the esteemed Headmaster on screen. The role was famously shared by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the original film franchise, and Jude Law and Toby Regbo portrayed a younger Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts prequel series. Lithgow’s extensive accolades include two Golden Globes, two Tony Awards, and two Academy Award nominations. Viewers will recognise him from his memorable turns as Winston Churchill in The Crown, the voice of Lord Farquaad in Shrek, and Dick Solomon in 3rd Rock From The Sun.
Severus Snape: A Complex Character Reimagined

Paapa Essiedu, 34, is set to embody the enigmatic Professor Severus Snape, a role indelibly linked to the late Alan Rickman. Essiedu, originally from London, honed his craft on the stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His television credits include appearances in Black Mirror and the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries I May Destroy You. Upon his casting, Essiedu shared his excitement on Instagram: “An honour and a privilege to be going on this journey with these legends. We shall eat and we shall leave no crumbs. See you at Hogwarts.”
Minerva McGonagall: A Steadfast Guardian

Janet McTeer, 63, will take on the mantle of Professor Minerva McGonagall, the formidable Head of Gryffindor and Transfiguration teacher. McTeer brings a wealth of experience from both stage and screen, boasting a Tony Award, an Olivier Award, a Golden Globe, and an Order of the British Empire (OBE). Fans may know her from her work in Ozark, Albert Nobbs, or Me Before You. The iconic Professor McGonagall was originally portrayed by the incomparable Dame Maggie Smith in the film adaptations.
Rubeus Hagrid: A Gentle Giant

English comedic legend Nick Frost, 53, is set to bring his unique charm to the role of Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwarts’ beloved groundskeeper. Frost is widely recognised for his collaborations with Simon Pegg in the Cornetto trilogy, including Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End. He steps into the shoes of the late Robbie Coltrane, who originated the role of Hagrid on screen. A fun fact for fans: despite Hagrid’s towering stature in the books, Frost stands at 5’7″ (171cm), according to IMDb.
Quirinus Quirrell: The Defence Against the Dark Arts Teacher

Luke Thallon, a 29-year-old English actor, will portray Professor Quirinus Quirrell, the first Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher in the series. Thallon is a seasoned theatre actor, having received critical acclaim for his performances in Albion and Leopoldstadt. In the original films, Professor Quirrell was played by Ian Hart.
The Lingering Question: Who Will Be Voldemort?
The casting of Lord Voldemort remains the final significant piece of the puzzle for the Harry Potter series. While no official announcement has been made, fan speculation is rife. Cillian Murphy, the Oscar-winning star of Peaky Blinders, has emerged as a popular choice among fans, though he has yet to express interest. Intriguingly, Ralph Fiennes, who so memorably embodied He Who Must Not Be Named in the film franchise, has publicly endorsed Murphy for the role, adding fuel to the rumour mill.
A Word from the Original Harry
Daniel Radcliffe, the original Harry Potter, has shared his thoughts on the new generation of actors stepping into these legendary roles. Speaking to People, he described the experience as “surreal” and admitted that seeing the new cast embark on a similar journey is deeply resonant. He shared a sense of camaraderie with his former co-stars, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, understanding the unique emotions involved. “It’s one of those where I think we all just know how the others feel, because we’re also feeling it,” Radcliffe remarked. “You just see the pictures of these kids, and you just want to grab them and hug them. That’s the impulse that I think that we, mainly, all have.”
Radcliffe also reflected on the perceived age of the young actors, noting the vast difference in his own perception of childhood now compared to when he was 11. “When you’re 11, and you’re doing something, you’re like, ‘Of course I’m old enough to do this — I’m the oldest I’ve ever been.’ But now when I meet 11-year-olds, I am like, ‘a, that seems nuts.’ It puts into perspective,” he said. He expressed a newfound admiration for his parents’ support during his time on the franchise, acknowledging the immense undertaking they navigated with him. “Honestly, it makes me admire – and I do tell them this, but my parents — more than I was capable of doing at the time. Just going like, ‘Wow, you got me through something crazy, and you did it with a huge amount of humor,’ yeah, it’s a big task.”
