Rhode Island Rink Shooting: Gunman Identified by Police

Tragedy Strikes Pawtucket Ice Rink: Mass Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Multiple Injured

A shocking incident of mass violence has shattered the peace at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, leaving at least two people dead and several others in critical condition. The chaos unfolded on a Monday afternoon, around 2:30 p.m. local time, amidst a high school hockey game, turning a sporting event into a scene of horror.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves revealed that authorities have identified a suspect in the shooting, believed to have targeted family members. According to Chief Goncalves, the individual, identified by their birth name as Robert Dorgan, also goes by the name Roberta Esposito and was born in 1969. The suspect reportedly entered the arena with the intention of watching a family member’s hockey game, and tragedy struck during their attendance.

A pivotal moment in de-escalating the dire situation came when a “good samaritan” intervened, according to Chief Goncalves. This brave individual’s actions are credited with bringing a swift end to the violent event, preventing further loss of life.

Beyond the two fatalities, three additional individuals sustained injuries and are currently in critical condition, receiving urgent medical care. Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien expressed the city’s grief, stating, “An act of senseless violence has taken the lives of two innocent victims with the suspect taking his own life.” Authorities confirmed the suspected shooter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, though early indications suggest a targeted family dispute.

The violence occurred during a match between two local co-op teams: Coventry-Johnston and St. Raphael-Providence Country Day-North Providence-North Smithfield.

Investigation Underway with Federal Support

The Pawtucket Police Department is spearheading the investigation into the shooting, with significant support from federal agencies. The FBI’s field office in Boston confirmed their response to the incident, with Director Kash Patel offering the agency’s full resources to state and local law enforcement. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) also dispatched personnel to the scene.

State police officers and FBI agents were observed outside the ice rink, which was cordoned off with crime scene tape as investigations commenced. Chief Goncalves has appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with recordings or information, particularly video footage from the event, to come forward and provide it to the Pawtucket Police Department.

Witnesses Describe Terrifying Moments

The sudden eruption of gunfire sent panicked patrons fleeing. A Walgreens employee recounted how distressed individuals rushed into the nearby pharmacy seeking refuge, prompting police to be called.

One young hockey player from Coventry Public Schools, who was on the ice when the shots rang out, described the terrifying experience. He recounted quickly retreating to the locker room with his teammates, pressing against the door for safety. “It was very scary. We were very nervous,” he told reporters, “It was a lot of shots.”

A video clip, reportedly captured during the hockey game and shared by local news outlet WJAR, appears to show gunshots being fired, causing players to swiftly leave the ice. The Independent has reached out to authorities to verify the video’s authenticity, with a representative for the City of Providence confirming it was indeed taken at the arena.

Schools Confirm Safety of Students

Following the incident, school districts involved in the hockey game have confirmed the safety of their students.

  • Coventry Public Schools: Superintendent Don Cowart issued a statement assuring that all students from the Coventry Boys Hockey team present at the arena have been accounted for and are safe.
  • Johnston Public Schools: The district confirmed that their student-athlete participating in the game is safe, as is another Johnston student who was in attendance. To their knowledge, no Johnston High School students were harmed.
  • Providence Country Day School: The school expressed shock and sadness, confirming that all students, parents, and staff who attended the game are safe.
  • North Providence Public Schools: Superintendent Joseph Goho stated that all students involved in the game are safe and extended thoughts and prayers to those affected.
  • St. Raphael Academy, North Smithfield, and North Providence officials also confirmed the safety of their respective students.

Community and State Leaders Offer Condolences

The Providence Bruins, the AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins, released a statement expressing their condolences to all those impacted by the “tragic events.”

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee recorded a video message, conveying the state’s grief. “Our state is grieving again,” he stated, his voice heavy with emotion. “As governor, a parent and a former coach my heart breaks for the victims, families, and everyone impacted by the devastating shooting at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket.”

This tragic event follows another mass shooting that occurred just two months prior at Brown University in Providence, which resulted in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others.
