Rhythm Secures Major Aussie Distribution for Bowel Cancer Test

Rhythm Biosciences Expands Bowel Cancer Test Reach Through 4Cyte Pathology Partnership

Rhythm Biosciences, an Australian biotechnology company, has inked a significant non-exclusive distribution service agreement with 4Cyte Pathology. This strategic partnership is set to dramatically enhance the commercial reach of Rhythm’s innovative blood-based bowel cancer test, ColoSTAT, across key eastern Australian states. The agreement grants Rhythm access to 4Cyte’s extensive network, comprising over 1000 patient collection centres spread across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory.

Under the terms of this three-year deal, which includes an option for a further two-year extension, 4Cyte Pathology will play a crucial role in supporting the collection of patient samples. These samples will then be processed at Rhythm’s certified laboratory located in Parkville, Melbourne. This collaboration aims to streamline the entire diagnostic process, from sample collection to laboratory analysis and results delivery, integrating ColoSTAT seamlessly into existing healthcare provider workflows.

Capital-Efficient Rollout and Enhanced Accessibility

The partnership is particularly noteworthy for its capital-efficient approach to commercialising ColoSTAT. By leveraging 4Cyte’s established infrastructure, Rhythm circumvents the need for substantial upfront investment in its own collection and courier networks. This approach allows for a more agile and demand-driven rollout, minimising financial risk while focusing resources on the core testing and development of the ColoSTAT product.

4Cyte Pathology, founded in 2017, is recognised as one of Australia’s largest independent, privately owned pathology providers. Its comprehensive network, supported by accredited laboratories, serves a wide array of general practitioners, specialists, and medical centres across the eastern seaboard. This existing clinical engagement provides Rhythm with an immediate and substantial geographic footprint in Australia’s most populated regions.

Furthermore, the agreement facilitates the promotion of ColoSTAT through 4Cyte’s established relationships with medical professionals. This direct line of communication is expected to accelerate practitioner adoption and awareness of the new diagnostic option. Importantly, the deal does not involve any upfront capital commitments or minimum volume guarantees from either party. Rhythm will manage the testing and invoice patients and partners directly on a per-test basis, a structure that limits immediate financial exposure but ties revenue directly to market uptake.

Addressing an Unmet Clinical Need in Bowel Cancer Screening

ColoSTAT is designed as a blood-based diagnostic tool to detect bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer. This disease remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. The test operates by measuring five specific protein biomarkers that can indicate the presence of the cancer.

Rhythm Biosciences positions ColoSTAT as a vital alternative for several patient groups. It offers a choice for individuals who experience symptoms suggestive of colorectal cancer but may be unable or unwilling to undergo traditional stool-based screening methods, which are currently the standard of care. The company highlights that bowel cancer screening rates in Australia currently fall below 50%, underscoring a significant unmet clinical need for more accessible and patient-friendly screening options. By providing a blood-based alternative, Rhythm aims to overcome the barriers associated with stool sample collection, thereby potentially improving screening participation rates and facilitating earlier detection.

Streamlining Clinical Workflows and Removing Adoption Barriers

The integration of ColoSTAT into 4Cyte’s routine pathology workflows is a key objective of this partnership. This means that general practitioners and specialists can request the ColoSTAT test using the same ordering systems and infrastructure they already employ for standard pathology services. This seamless integration is designed to remove a significant hurdle to adoption, making it easier for healthcare providers to incorporate the new test into their existing practice.

Patient blood samples will be collected by trained phlebotomists within 4Cyte’s extensive collection network. These samples will then be efficiently transported to Rhythm’s accredited laboratory in Parkville, Melbourne, for analysis. Following testing, the results will be communicated back to the referring healthcare practitioners via 4Cyte’s established reporting systems, ensuring a consistent and familiar reporting mechanism for clinicians.

Strategic Vision and Future Prospects

Dr. David Atkins, CEO of Rhythm Biosciences, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting the company’s positive prior experience with the 4Cyte team through its second product, the Genetype predictive cancer risk assessment tool. “This partnership enables healthcare practitioners to order ColoSTAT through the same systems they already use for routine pathology, removing a key barrier to adoption,” he stated. Dr. Atkins further emphasised the critical need for diverse testing pathways and believes this partnership positions ColoSTAT to address this unmet need effectively at scale by being accessible through established pathology workflows.

The immediate focus for Rhythm and 4Cyte will be the integration of ColoSTAT into 4Cyte’s clinical ordering systems and the establishment of robust operational procedures for sample collection, transportation, and results delivery. Following this foundational phase, Rhythm plans a broader rollout of the ColoSTAT test across the nation. This strategic alignment with a major pathology provider is a crucial step in Rhythm’s mission to improve bowel cancer detection rates and contribute to better patient outcomes.
