A Thrilling Victory for the Richmond Tigers
In a dramatic encounter at Optus Stadium, the Richmond Tigers secured their first win of the 2026 season in a nail-biting contest against the West Coast Eagles. The game concluded with a score of 15.9 (99) to 13.10 (88), giving the Tigers an 11-point victory and ending their 12-week losing streak against the Eagles.
The match was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading kicks and facing injury setbacks. The game saw a total of 13 lead changes, nine of which occurred in the first half, providing the Perth crowd with an unforgettable spectacle.
Key Moments and Injuries
Early in the game, the Tigers faced a setback when Dion Prestia pulled up lame inside 50 as he approached a contest. He slowly made his way off the ground, and later, it was confirmed that he had suffered another devastating calf injury. Will Schofield, speaking on Fox Footy, revealed the extent of the injury:
“Done for the day. He’s done a calf. Another soft tissue unfortunately for Prestia,” said Schofield. “That’s four to six weeks.”
Despite being a man down for most of the match, coach Adem Yze praised the young Richmond core for their performance. He highlighted the importance of close games in hostile environments for the development of his players.
“It’s awesome for our young players, for one, win, lose or draw, a close game scenario in a hostile environment is something we need them to get used to,” Yze said. “Winning the games, the reward for effort that we’ve been feeling like we’re getting closer and closer the last few weeks. We’ve been dealing with it a bit.”
Yze also acknowledged the team’s ongoing injury challenges this season, emphasizing the resilience and fight of his squad. He mentioned games where three players were out at half-time against the Kangas, yet the team’s spirit remained unshaken.
“They would never give up. So, Dion, unfortunately, he felt his calf a little bit today, but what he did in the back of the box, coaching our younger players, listening to him talk about stoppage structures and running patterns and what Harley Reid was doing was just exactly what we want. Older players passing on some knowledge to our younger players is terrific.”
Looking Ahead
With this hard-fought victory, the Richmond Tigers are set to face the Adelaide Crows at the MCG next Sunday. Meanwhile, the West Coast Eagles will take on the Melbourne Demons in their upcoming match. The Tigers’ ability to overcome adversity and secure a win is a promising sign for the rest of the season.
