A Glimpse of Resilience Amid Challenges
Amid a challenging season marked by a long injury list and inconsistent performances, Adam Yze, the coach of the Richmond Tigers, finds hope in the determination of his younger players. Despite a tough loss to Adelaide at the MCG, where the Crows secured a 14.14 (98) to 9.7 (61) victory, Yze noted that the team’s younger members showed a strong desire to improve.
The game saw Richmond struggle in the third quarter as Adelaide took control. However, after the match, Yze observed the reactions of his least experienced players—Tom Burton, Sam Cumming, Oliver Hayes-Brown, and Patrick Retschko, who had played their third or fourth games. Their response was telling.
“They’re walking away from this game with a bad taste in their mouth, which is terrific,” Yze said. “They’re made of the right stuff.”
He emphasized that it’s easy for young players to feel happy playing AFL football in their third game, especially on Mother’s Day with family in the crowd. However, the Tigers are not satisfied with just being happy.
After a win in their previous game, Richmond led Adelaide by 10 points at halftime. But the Crows stepped up their game, and the Tigers couldn’t keep up, with Adelaide kicking five goals to none in the third term.

Richmond managed to rally in the final quarter, but Adelaide ultimately pulled away. Yze praised the team’s attitude and commitment.
“Our attitude and intent haven’t changed and haven’t wavered,” he said. “We could have turned our toes up in the last quarter, but the response … it hasn’t been an issue. That’s the basis of our club, really. We’ll keep fighting right to the end and we get everyone available, we’ll be really hard to play against.”
Yze highlighted the motivation and grit within the team. “There’s a lot of motivation and a lot of grit within our footy club. That’s all I can ask.”
However, the challenge remains that while the spirit is willing, the physical condition of the players is being tested. Tom Brown suffered a broken arm that requires surgery, and Kane McAuliffe is dealing with an Achilles tendon issue. These injuries are slowing down the team’s rebuild.
“When you talk about the frustration, we need our players getting better on the AFL field, so we need them available,” Yze said. “Sammy Lalor can’t get better sitting here watching.”
He added, “When we have everyone available, we’re a really competitive team.”
This situation forces Yze to maintain a delicate balance in his coaching approach.
“We’re impatient. My job is to get us back to playing finals footy as quick as we can,” he said. “But the reality is, there’s going to be patience around when that is. I’m preaching patience right now because of what we’re going through.”
