Margot Robbie Recounts London Club Bans and Unlikely Fan Encounters
Australian acting sensation Margot Robbie has lifted the lid on her rather eventful past living in London, revealing that she and her friends were once banned from “most of the clubs in Clapham,” including the notoriously lively Infernos. The 35-year-old star shared these amusing anecdotes during a recent appearance on the popular Table Manners podcast, hosted by Jessie Ware and her mother, Lennie.
Robbie, who has captivated audiences with her roles in blockbusters like Barbie, The Wolf of Wall Street, and as Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe, painted a vivid picture of her London nightlife experiences. She explained that she first heard whispers of Infernos from housemates she met while working in Belgium. These friends painted a picture of a club where anything went and getting kicked out was virtually impossible. “They would tell me about the infamous Infernos,” Robbie recalled. “‘This place is so fun, you can’t get kicked out of there, you can do anything in Infernos, and you can’t get kicked out’.”
Intrigued by this legend, Robbie decided to experience Infernos for herself during a weekend trip to London. However, her visit was spectacularly short-lived. “Within about 15 minutes, we got kicked out,” she admitted. When she protested to the bouncer, citing the club’s supposed invincibility, she was met with a rather blunt but fair response. “Look, we allow most things, but when your friend does… then we kick you out,” the bouncer explained. Robbie, acknowledging the logic, conceded, “Okay, fair enough.”
A Clapham Banishment and a Flat Near the Fray
When pressed by Jessie Ware about the extent of her clubbing expulsions, Robbie confessed, “Most of the clubs in Clapham I’d say, have kicked us out, for a while we were banned at a number of places.” Despite these frequent evictions, her fondness for the area, and indeed for Infernos itself, never wavered. In fact, she revealed that when she and her friends were looking for a place to live together in Clapham, their decision was heavily influenced by their proximity to the infamous nightclub. “So we literally signed our lease just because it was down the road from Infernos,” she stated, highlighting their unwavering dedication to being close to the action.
Unconvinced Off-Licence Owners and Red Carpet Confusion
Beyond the dance floor drama, Robbie also shared a heartwarming and humorous story about her relationship with the owners of her local off-licence in Clapham, Johnny and Neil. These gentlemen, Robbie explained, “never believed” she was a famous actress. Their skepticism reached its peak when she invited them to one of her film premieres.
“I was like, ‘Johnny and Neil, I’d love for you to come, I’ve got a premiere’,” she recounted. Their disbelief was palpable. “‘You?’,” they questioned. “And I was like, ‘Yeah. I’m in the movie’.” Even after she presented them with an official invitation, they remained unconvinced. In a particularly amusing moment, they mistook her co-star, Will Smith, for the main attraction, pointing out, “It’s not you, that’s Will Smith.” Robbie gently corrected them, explaining, “That’s Will Smith, but next to Will Smith, that’s me.” Despite her efforts, they ultimately decided not to attend, still seemingly unconvinced by her involvement in the film.
However, the story has a happy ending. “They now know that I work in the movies,” Robbie confirmed, adding that she and her friends still occasionally pop back to the off-licence to visit Johnny and Neil and say hello, their initial skepticism having long since faded.
Robbie’s upcoming projects include her role as Catherine Earnshaw in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel, Wuthering Heights.
