Broncos’ Late Surge Fails to Overcome Discipline Issues
The Brisbane Broncos faced a challenging match against the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium, where their late attacking resurgence could not hide the team’s lack of discipline. The game turned into an intense 80-minute battle, with the Roosters emerging victorious with a final score of 38-24.
The hosts quickly found their rhythm in the opening two minutes, putting the reigning premiers on the back foot. The Broncos struggled with injuries, a sin bin, and costly errors throughout the match, making it a tough day for Michael Maguire’s team.
For 65 minutes, it seemed like a nightmare for the Broncos, but they managed to pull off a late attacking surge. Reece Walsh scored the first points of the match in the 50th minute, followed by Xavier Willison and Patrick Carrigan. This performance left former coach Kevin Walters excited about the potential of the playing group.
“The Broncos will never give up,” said Walters, now the Kangaroos coach, on Fox League.
However, just as the Broncos were gaining momentum, they suffered another setback with the departure of their key player, Adam Reynolds. Reynolds was attempting to stop Naufahu Whyte’s run when he got tackled and hit his head on the turf. The 35-year-old lay on the ground as Nat Butcher crossed for the Tricolours’ fifth try of the day. Angus Crichton assisted in the play, and Reynolds was immediately taken off for a head injury assessment.
“Straight away, you could see he was in trouble,” Walters said.
Reynolds was not the only Broncos player to leave the field due to injury. Deine Mariner was forced off after 34 minutes due to a “bad cork” and returned for the final 15 minutes when Josiah Karapani got injured.
Additional Injuries and Controversial Incidents
Coach Michael Maguire also had to deal with concerns over Ben Talty, who was reported for an ugly hip drop on James Tedesco. Tedesco charged out of dummy half and was brought down awkwardly by Talty. The Roosters skipper stayed down for a short period before being helped to his feet.
“He is up and about which is good news for the Roosters,” Walters said.
A review of the incident was conducted by the Bunker. Talty was not sin-binned because his weight landed on the ground and not on Tedesco, meaning there was “not an elevated risk of injury.” Tedesco questioned the ruling, but referee Tony Gee made his position clear.
“If I did my knee there or my ankle, it could be dangerous,” Tedesco was heard saying. Gee replied: “I get what you are saying, but we have all these elements we have to review. We have gone through that process. It has been reviewed… it’s not an elevated risk. It is on report.”

Soon after, the Roosters had to cope with the absence of Lindsay Collins, who was pulled for a head injury assessment following a clash with Jack Gosiewski. He did not return to the match.
Despite these challenges, the home team remained strong, with Daniel Tupou scoring his 190th career try. Angus Crichton also left the field late in the second half due to an injury.
The Broncos’ late attack could not overcome the difficulties they faced, and Kotoni Staggs was sent to the sin bin for head-high contact in the final 10 minutes. Reece Robson sealed the victory for the Roosters with a try in the 75th minute.
