Roy Keane and Schmeichel Clash Over West Ham’s Disallowed Goal vs Arsenal

Manchester United Legend Peter Schmeichel Criticizes Referee Decision in West Ham vs. Arsenal Match

Peter Schmeichel, the legendary goalkeeper for Manchester United, expressed his frustration with the decision made by the referee during the recent match between West Ham and Arsenal. He believes that the Hammers were extremely unfortunate to be denied a late equalizer in their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. Schmeichel described the decision as “so wrong on so many levels.”

West Ham appeared to have scored an equalizing goal through Callum Wilson, who managed to find a way through a crowded area in a moment of high tension and drama. However, after a lengthy VAR check that lasted over five minutes, it was determined that West Ham substitute Pablo had fouled David Raya in the build-up to the goal. Replays showed that the Portuguese player had placed an arm across the Arsenal goalkeeper at the London Stadium.

The Gunners’ away end could finally breathe a sigh of relief as referee Chris Kavanagh confirmed that the goal had been disallowed. This allowed Mikel Arteta’s team to maintain their five-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the league.

West Ham, on the other hand, remain in the relegation zone, just one point behind Tottenham, who will host Leeds on Monday night.

Praise for the Referees

Following the match, Mikel Arteta praised the officials for their bravery in making the correct decision. He stated that Kavanagh and his team showed a lot of courage by allowing the referee to review the incident.

“Today I have to congratulate them [the officials]. You need a lot of courage and bravery to stand out and give the opportunity to the referee to have a look at the action,” Arteta said.

He emphasized that when looking at the replay, there was no doubt that it was a clear foul. “They were very brave. The action deserved that. In my opinion, it is very clear. They are the rules and we ask for consistency.”

Expert Opinions Agree on the Decision

In the Sky Sports studio, Jamie Redknapp, Ian Wright, and Roy Keane all agreed that the correct decision was made regarding the disallowed goal. Redknapp remarked that Arsenal had gotten away with a close call.

“Oh yeah, absolutely [they got away with one],” he said. “The relief for the fanbase and the manager and the players… because for that moment in time, when the ball goes in your net, Declan Rice is trying to unravel everything that’s happening.”

He added that the situation was chaotic, comparing it to watching the Super Bowl. “It was chaos.”

Ian Wright also supported the decision, stating that when the goal went in, the first thought was always to hope something had gone wrong. “Obviously you look back at it and his arm is across him. It was an easy one to give in such a tense moment.”

Criticism from Roy Keane

Roy Keane echoed the sentiments of his fellow pundits, while also criticizing Pablo for giving VAR an opportunity to disallow the goal.

“VAR are going to check everything… do not put your hands on the goalkeeper! Certainly don’t leave them on for three or four seconds,” he explained. “I think it was madness and there’s loads of other fouls, there’s all sorts going on, but because the goalkeeper has such a big part to play, I think it is a foul.”

Schmeichel’s Disagreement

However, Keane’s former United teammate Schmeichel took a different stance. He criticized the length of the VAR check, which he felt created unnecessary doubt about the decision.

“What really makes me angry is that Arsenal would never be top of the league if that’s a free-kick,” Schmeichel said on Viaplay’s post-match coverage. “That’s how they’ve scored so many goals, by blocking people, holding people, doing all kinds of things.”

He pointed out that the VAR check took over five minutes, which he felt undermined the decision. “I think it’s so wrong. I just don’t understand why all of a sudden that’s a free-kick, because it’s not been for any teams all the way throughout the season.”
