Prince and Princess of Wales Shine at BAFTAs Amidst Royal Family Turmoil
Just days after a significant event concerning Prince Andrew, the Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Catherine, made a radiant appearance at the prestigious BAFTAs. The royal couple graced the Royal Festival Hall in London, stepping out for the annual film awards in their first public engagement together since Prince Andrew’s arrest on Thursday morning, which is reportedly linked to suspicions of misconduct in public office.
The Prince and Princess presented a united front, with both opting for coordinated outfits. Catherine looked stunning in a recycled Gucci gown, elegantly cinched with a maroon belt. Prince William complemented her ensemble with a matching blazer, showcasing a thoughtful and stylish pairing. This particular gown holds a special significance for Catherine, as she had previously worn it to the 100 Women in Finance’s gala dinner in 2019, an event focused on supporting mental health in schools.
Their public appearance comes at a particularly sensitive time for the Royal Family, with renewed calls for King Charles to disclose the extent of his knowledge regarding Prince Andrew’s alleged misconduct prior to his arrest. Following the detention of the former Duke of York, King Charles issued a rare statement expressing his “wholehearted support and co-operation” with the ongoing investigation. Buckingham Palace is understood to have been unaware that Prince Andrew was to be arrested.

The King’s statement conveyed his “deepest concern” over the news regarding Prince Andrew and the suspicions of misconduct. He emphasised the importance of a “full, fair and proper process” for the investigation, assuring that the relevant authorities have the family’s complete support. The monarch concluded by stating unequivocally, “the law must take its course.” Prince William and Catherine are reportedly in agreement with the King’s stance.
During their attendance at the EE BAFTA Film Awards, Prince William shared his thoughts on some of the nominated films. He revealed that he had not yet seen Hamnet, a Best Picture nominee, as he felt he “needed to be in a calm mood.” He disclosed that Catherine had watched the deeply emotional film the previous night and was left visibly moved, describing her reaction as being in “floods of tears.” William explained his hesitation, stating, “I need to be in quite a calm state and I am not at the moment. I will save it.”
Hamnet, a film that delves into the poignant story of the tragic childhood death of Shakespeare’s son and the profound grief experienced by his parents, clearly resonated with the Princess. Catherine jokingly remarked on her decision to watch it before the ceremony, admitting, “I thought it was a bad idea, actually. Ended up with very puffy eyes.” She lauded the film’s exquisite cinematography and its “fantastic” musical score. The Princess also expressed her admiration for the film’s “presentation of intergenerational grief.”
Catherine added that she and William have a “long list of films that we still need to get through.” Prince William also mentioned that he had not yet seen Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, and described the vampire film Sinners as “a bit dark.” However, he did commend One Battle After Another, noting, “We were not expecting it to start the way it did.”
The Princess also touched upon the growing interest in films among her children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Emily Stillman, Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, reminisced about a previous encounter with Catherine, recalling when she was pregnant with George and engaging in “Harry Potter spells.” This alluded to the royal couple’s 2013 visit to the Warner Brothers studios, where they explored the Harry Potter set.
Catherine responded, “I was saying how much the children would love to look around. They love the idea of going behind the scenes and finding out how it all happens.” She also praised the studios for their efforts in “showcasing all the different career opportunities” within the film industry.

Inside the event, the Prince and Princess engaged in conversations with a distinguished group of BAFTA executives, including CEO Jane Millichip and Chair Sara Putt, as well as Chair of the Film Committee Emily Stillman and Emma Baehr, Executive Director Awards and Content. Speaking further about Hamnet with Elaine Bedell, CEO of the Southbank Centre, and Allison Kirkby, CEO of sponsors BT Group, Catherine commended the child actors, stating, “The children did so well.” She elaborated on her appreciation for the film’s “stripped back” approach and its focus on “human emotions,” noting the “connection to nature.”
Catherine reiterated how films can serve as a valuable tool for discussing important topics with her children. “The children are starting to get interested in films and it’s a really great way to have some of the hard conversations with them,” she remarked, referring again to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. Prince William has held the esteemed position of President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts since 2010, and the couple have been regular attendees at the BAFTAs. However, this marked Catherine’s return to the ceremony after a two-year absence during her recovery from a cancer diagnosis.
The Prince and Princess were seated in the front row for the ceremony, which was hosted by Scottish actor Alan Cumming. The event featured musical performances from KPop Demon Hunters and Jessie Ware, who performed during a touching In Memoriam segment. A moment of amusement arose when Cumming introduced The Crown star Erin Doherty, playfully misstating her roles before correcting himself.

Meanwhile, King Charles has affirmed his commitment to granting police unrestricted access to all necessary files and records pertaining to any investigations into his brother. Prince Andrew’s arrest followed reports from Thames Valley Police that they were “assessing” allegations of him sharing confidential trade reports and investment opportunities with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein in 2010 and 2011, during his tenure as the UK’s special trade envoy in Asia.
Following his arrest, Prince Andrew was subjected to an 11-hour questioning session. He was later photographed slumped in a Range Rover, attempting to evade cameras as he departed the Aylsham Police Investigation Centre. He was transferred from Wood Farm, located on the royal Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where he had been residing after his eviction from Royal Lodge in Windsor by King Charles earlier this month. Police have conducted searches at Wood Farm and are reportedly continuing their investigation at the seven-bedroom mansion, Royal Lodge. Authorities are understood to have broad discretion to expand their investigation if further criminal activity is uncovered during the examination of the former prince’s possessions and documents, as reported by The Observer.
The BAFTAs also saw the arrival of several Hollywood stars, with politically charged thriller One Battle After Another and blues-infused epic Sinners leading the nominations. Industry insiders suggest that the Shakespearean family tragedy Hamnet could potentially secure the Best Picture award, particularly if British film industry voters are swayed by the emotionally rich narrative and intense performances in Chloé Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel.
A constellation of stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy, Glenn Close, and Ethan Hawke, were among those gracing the red carpet outside the Royal Festival Hall. The evening’s glamour was further amplified by Kate Hudson, who channelled Old Hollywood elegance in a striking red satin Prada gown with a matching train. Jessie Buckley, a strong contender for Leading Actress for her role in Hamnet, certainly turned heads in an electric blue Chanel gown. Emma Stone opted for a bolder look, showcasing a hint of sideboob in a cut-out black halterneck gown. Maura Higgins, known for her dramatic fashion choices, made a statement in a captivating black and red satin gown with a luminous train.
