Rugby Legends Stunned by 13-Year-Old ‘Superhuman’

A Heroic Act Inspires Rugby Stars and Fans Alike

In a heartwarming twist of events, Australia’s rugby sevens stars found themselves in the spotlight as they met with a young hero who captured the attention of people around the world. The roles were reversed at the Perth Sevens, where players and former professionals lined up to meet 13-year-old Austin Appelbee, whose incredible bravery made headlines.

A Brave Rescue in Challenging Conditions

Austin Appelbee became an international hero this month after a family paddleboarding and kayaking trip turned dangerous in rough waters. During the incident, his mother and two younger siblings became stranded, prompting Austin to take action. He was kayaking back to shore to raise the alarm when his kayak began taking on water. Instead of continuing in the kayak, he swam more than 4 kilometers to reach safety.

Marine Rescue commander Paul Bresland praised Austin’s efforts, calling it a “superhuman effort.” He had been without a life jacket for two hours, yet he managed to make it to shore. His actions ultimately led to the rescue of his family members, who were later found by emergency services clinging to a paddleboard after spending nearly 10 hours in the water.

Recognition from Rugby Australia

Rugby Australia expressed its admiration for Austin and his family by hosting them at the world series tournament at HBF Park. Phil Waugh, the chief executive of Rugby Australia, said:

“Austin and the Appelbee family are an inspiration to all Australians and people around the world. Austin’s effort in swimming 4km to save the lives of his mother and younger brother and sister is an act of bravery that Australians will remember forever.”

He also thanked WA Premier Roger Cook for introducing the Appelbee family to Rugby Australia and expressed the organization’s honor in hosting them at the Perth SVNS. Austin was called a hero by many, including the rugby community.

A Newfound Celebrity Life

Despite the overwhelming attention, Austin seems to be enjoying his new status. He told 9News that the experience was “full on,” especially since people were asking for photos even at 10 o’clock on a Friday evening. However, he remains grounded and focused on his everyday life.

Rugby Results and Future Outlook

Australia’s women’s team finished as runners-up in the Perth Sevens, while the men’s team came in third. New Zealand won the women’s tournament, and South Africa took the men’s title.

Currently, Australia’s women’s team trails New Zealand by four points in the overall standings, with only two tournaments left before entering the new-look finals format.

Aussie coach Tim Walsh acknowledged the strength of New Zealand’s performance in the final, where they won 29-7. He said:

“They’re one step ahead of us at the moment. They’re putting out something last week, and then adjusting all the things, and we’re playing a little bit of catch-up. Hopefully by the finals, they might have run out of cards to play, and we’ll have to do our best later.”
