A Unique Setting and a Controversial Interview
Russell Brand has recently shared his thoughts on a now-viral interview with Piers Morgan, highlighting the unusual location where it took place. He described the setting as ‘Kafka-esque,’ suggesting a surreal and unsettling atmosphere. The interview, which occurred in a building that he likened to a liminal space, became the subject of much discussion.
Brand’s comments come after an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, which was more notable for nearly two minutes of dead air than for the conversation itself. During this time, Morgan asked Brand about specific Bible passages he had referenced during court. As a born-again Christian facing trial for serious criminal offences, Brand struggled to find the right verses, eventually admitting defeat.
The Interview Experience
Brand later took to social media to share more details about the interview. On his X account, he described Morgan’s studio as ‘soulless’ and posted a 77-second video outlining his experience. In the video, Brand referenced Czech writer Franz Kafka and his depiction of bureaucracy, drawing parallels between the Associated Press building in New York and News International in London.
He mentioned features such as unmanned turnstiles, no windows, and an elevator through which one is ‘summoned up.’ Brand noted that while the photographs displayed by the Associated Press might seem prestigious, they reminded him of a famous image of a Vietnamese man being shot at point blank range.
Bureaucracy and Humanity
As the video continued, Brand discussed how systems that present themselves as neutral often shift towards an evil principle. He questioned what bureaucracies do, stating that they strip away our humanness. He used examples like phone calls to service providers or Wi-Fi networks, where individuals are often met with machines and, if they reach a human, it’s someone with no power.
Using the TSA as an example, he highlighted how people are denied and stripped of their humanity within these systems.
Book Promotion and Memes
The interview was part of the press tour for Brand’s latest book, How to Become a Christian in 7 Days. In the wake of the interview, Brand acknowledged the memes it sparked. In a video, he humorously mentioned still searching for the passage, eventually finding it marked in his Bible. He tweeted about discovering the verse and attributed his earlier struggle to the pressure of the circumstances.
Brand emphasized the importance of love, stating that it is not based on accomplishments but on who loves us.
Accusations and Personal Reflections
Meanwhile, Morgan accused Brand of being ‘inappropriately tactile’ during the interview. He described the touching as ‘a bit weird’ and noted that it surprised him given the allegations against Brand.
Detectives first began investigating Brand in September 2023 following several accusations from alleged victims. Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times alleged several offences between the late 90s and early noughties. Brand has maintained his innocence, claiming that any encounters were ‘consensual.’
On Megyn Kelly’s podcast, Brand revealed an ‘exploitative’ past sexual relationship with a 16-year-old when he was 30. He noted that the age of consent is 16 in the UK and described his younger self as ‘a different person’ and ‘immature.’ He acknowledged that consensual sex with a power differential could be exploitative.
