Doggett Sidelined as Redbacks Aim for Back-to-Back Sheffield Shield Titles
South Australia’s potent fast-bowling attack has suffered a significant blow with paceman Brendan Doggett being ruled out of the upcoming Sheffield Shield final due to a hamstring injury. The speedster’s inability to recover in time means he will miss the crucial clash against Victoria, as the South Australians strive to clinch consecutive Sheffield Shield triumphs.
Doggett was instrumental in South Australia’s memorable victory over Queensland in last year’s final, earning him the ‘man of the match’ honours. His impressive haul of 11 wickets at Adelaide’s Karen Rolton Oval was a key factor in ending the state’s Shield drought, which had stretched back to 1996.

However, the fiery quick will be absent from the squad making the road trip to Melbourne to face the table-topping Victorians at the Junction Oval. SA coach Ryan Harris confirmed the disappointing news, stating that despite best efforts, Doggett’s hamstring simply hasn’t come up for the match.
“He hasn’t come up – we tried as best we can,” Harris told reporters on Monday. “He was going pretty well and he had a bit of a step back last week. Going into a final, you sometimes risk it, but this is probably too much, too fast.” Doggett hasn’t featured in a match since sustaining the injury back in February.

The decision to rest Doggett also takes into account his potential future commitments. “He has got potentially a big August coming up with the Australian stuff as well, so we want to make sure we’re not going to run him into the ground,” Harris explained. “He doesn’t have to have surgery this time… we’re obviously going to miss him going in after what he did last year.”
Chasing History: The Redbacks’ Quest for Consecutive Titles
South Australia’s triumph in last year’s final was a watershed moment, marking their first Sheffield Shield title in over two decades. Now, the state is on the cusp of achieving another significant milestone: winning back-to-back championships for the very first time in their history.
Test wicketkeeper and key player for South Australia, Alex Carey, highlighted the significance of playing for and winning titles in the Sheffield Shield. “That’s what you play Sheffield Shield cricket to do, is to win titles,” Carey said. “The excitement around last year was really special.”
However, Carey also emphasised that the team’s identity extends beyond just silverware. “But for this group, titles won’t just define us. I think we’ve got a really strong culture here in South Australian cricket for continued success.” This suggests a focus on sustained performance and development within the squad.
Squad Adjustments and Optimism Ahead of the Final
With Doggett’s unfortunate absence, the South Australian squad will be bolstered by the inclusion of fast bowler Wes Agar and promising young batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk, who are travelling as spares for the trip to Victoria.
Carey acknowledged the strength of their opponents and the merit of Victoria earning the right to host the final. “We understand they’re a really good team and they’ve earned the right to host the final,” he stated.
Despite the setback of losing a key bowler, there is a palpable sense of optimism within the South Australian camp. Carey expressed confidence in the team’s current form, believing they are peaking at the right time. “I do think we’re playing our best cricket at the right time of the year. We’re looking at getting over to Victoria, playing our brand of cricket… we’re excited.”

The Redbacks will need to draw on their strong culture and recent success to overcome the formidable Victorian outfit and etch their names into Sheffield Shield history once again. The final promises to be a keenly contested affair, with South Australia aiming to prove their mettle even without one of their star pacemen.
