Saints Consider Move Following Homophobic Slur Verdict

Lance Collard Faces Serious Consequences for Alleged Use of Homophobic Slur

St Kilda forward Lance Collard has been found guilty of using a homophobic slur against an opponent, potentially jeopardizing his AFL career. The incident, which occurred during a VFL match last month, has led to a disciplinary hearing that has now concluded with the tribunal upholding the charge of conduct unbecoming.

Collard, who is 21 years old, had previously been banned for six matches in 2024 for using the same homophobic word. This time, he denied using the slur, insisting that he only said, “Come here, maggot,” to Frankston player Darby Hipwell. However, Hipwell and his teammate Bailey Lambert both claimed that Collard used the offensive term.

The marathon hearing took place on Thursday, but the tribunal panel did not reach a determination before the 5pm deadline. Deliberations resumed on Friday morning, and the judgment was made public late that evening. A further hearing will be held to determine the sanction.

The AFL has expressed its stance on the matter, stating that it has no tolerance for the use of homophobic language in the game. The league acknowledged the decision of the independent disciplinary tribunal to uphold the charge against Collard. The AFL emphasized that its expectations have been clearly communicated to all players through education programs.

St Kilda Football Club has indicated that they may appeal the tribunal’s decision. In a statement, the club expressed disappointment with the outcome and mentioned that further submissions from both parties will be made regarding any penalty. A date for this next step has not yet been confirmed. The club is also reviewing the tribunal’s written findings and will consider its position, including potential avenues for appeal.

Collard’s situation remains uncertain as the process continues. The club stated that it will continue to support him throughout this time. As the matter remains ongoing, the club will make no further comments at this time.

Hipwell, who played alongside Collard with VFL club Sandringham when that side was St Kilda’s state-league affiliate, was adamant that the slur was used. He described how Collard had his head up against his ear and said, “Darby, you ‘fing f**.” Lambert, another teammate, supported Hipwell’s account.

Collard has played 15 AFL games since being taken by the Saints in the 2023 draft. He is currently serving a two-match ban stemming from a high hit on an opponent in the same VFL match where the alleged slur occurred.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by athletes in maintaining professional conduct on and off the field. The AFL’s strict policies on behavior reflect the importance of fostering a respectful and inclusive environment for all players and fans. As the situation unfolds, the focus will remain on ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to address such incidents and prevent their recurrence.
