Essendon Coach’s Response to GWS Banner
During a post-match press conference on Saturday night, Essendon coach Brad Scott shared his thoughts on the GWS Giants’ banner that caught his attention. The banner featured the word “strengths” beneath the Essendon logo, but it was left blank. Below that, the word “weaknesses” was written, with “7916 days” listed underneath – a reference to the length of time since the Bombers last won a finals match.
Scott acknowledged the jibe, which appeared to be a playful nod to the recent “whiteboard-gate” incident. He noted that the Giants might be “desperate for some relevance” in the competition as they aim to build their fan base.
“I did catch it out of the corner of my eye,” Scott said. “I mean, the Giants are pretty desperate for some relevance in the competition to try and build their fan base.”
He emphasized the importance of growing the AFL in the northern states, particularly in Western Sydney and on the Gold Coast. However, he was reluctant to comment further on other clubs, stating that each team would make its own decisions.
Whiteboard-Gate Incident
The “whiteboard-gate” incident involved a Brisbane Lions parent who exposed a whiteboard containing notes about Essendon players. Zach Merrett and Kyle Langford were labeled “selfish,” Sam Durham was called a “hot head,” and Ben McKay was noted as having “low confidence.” Despite this, Scott said he did not use the incident to motivate his players this week.
“I think it’s interesting for people,” he said. “It’s not something I spent much time on at all. The only time I spend on it is when I get asked questions about it.”
Essendon’s Performance Against GWS
Despite their efforts, the Bombers struggled to secure their second win from their past 18 games. They led by 15 points at half-time and two points at the final change, but the Giants managed to pull ahead in the final term.
GWS scored five goals to Essendon’s two in the last quarter, ultimately securing a 14-point victory. With six minutes remaining and GWS leading by eight points, Connor Idun made an outstanding smother as Jayden Nguyen attempted to score from just outside the goal square.
The final score was GWS 16.7 (103) to Essendon 13.11 (89).
