Sharks’ Finals Dream Derailed: Seven Stars Set to Exit

Sharks Brace for Roster Shake-Up Amidst Rival Club Interest

The Cronulla Sharks are facing a significant challenge as the upcoming NRL season looms, with a substantial portion of their top 30 squad coming off contract. This situation presents coach Craig Fitzgibbon with what could be the most substantial roster overhaul of his tenure, which began in 2022. Nearly half of the Sharks’ contracted players, approximately 15 individuals, will require new deals to remain at the club.

The list of players whose contracts are expiring is formidable, featuring key figures vital to the Sharks’ recent success. At the forefront is club captain Cameron McInnes, a player whose leadership and on-field contributions have been immense. Alongside him are other prominent names such as Braden Uele, Jesse Ramien, Sione Katoa, Siosifa Talakai, Toby Rudolf, and Will Kennedy.

The club’s CEO, Dino Mezzatesta, has publicly acknowledged the growing concerns, raising the alarm about rival NRL clubs actively seeking to poach Sharks talent. This comes at a critical juncture for the Sharks, who have consistently reached the preliminary finals for the past two seasons. The prospect of seeing their established squad dismantled is a daunting one.

Mezzatesta has been candid about the difficulties the club faces in retaining its entire playing group. “Our intent will be we’ll try and get as many done as possible… but I think we’re realists as well. We’re not going to be able to fit everyone in the roster,” he stated. He highlighted that financial constraints alone will make it challenging, even without factoring in the desire to keep everyone.

The emergence of new clubs and expansion teams, specifically mentioning the Perth Bears and the PNG Chiefs, is intensifying the competition for player signatures. Mezzatesta anticipates that losing some players will be an unavoidable outcome. “With the opportunities that are out there, the Perth Bears coming in, the PNG Chiefs, there is going to be so much competition. It’s going to be inevitable. We won’t keep everyone. It just won’t work.”

Captain McInnes Faces Uncertain Future

Captain Cameron McInnes finds himself in a particularly delicate position as he approaches the later stages of his illustrious career. The tenacious lock has been a cornerstone of the Sharks’ resurgence, acting as the engine room behind their impressive run of form. However, the 32-year-old veteran suffered a significant setback last year when he tore his ACL, with his return to the field not expected until around Round 10.

This injury means McInnes will need to prove his fitness and form upon his return, especially as he recovers from his second ACL tear. This situation could influence his ability to secure a new contract, potentially at the backend of his playing days. In a candid admission, McInnes has recently indicated his openness to exploring opportunities with other clubs if necessary.

CEO Mezzatesta echoed the sentiment that managing player contracts, particularly during such a period of uncertainty, is one of the toughest aspects of running the club. “It could be unsettling, but you’ve to make sure you look after the player, number one,” he emphasised.

He stressed the importance of honesty and transparency with the players during this period. “And I think honesty and transparency is really important at this stage, and in particular for them at this point in their career. It’s also probably a message for the younger boys coming through, they need to know they’re going to have their chance as well. So it’s probably time we started looking at who is coming through the ranks.”

The Sharks are set to kick off their 2024 campaign against the Gold Coast Titans in Round 1 at their home ground, Shark Park. Coach Fitzgibbon and his team will largely field a squad similar to that of the previous season, with fans hopeful of another deep finals push. The challenge of navigating the current contract situation will undoubtedly be a key focus for the club as they aim to build on their recent successes.

Key Players Off Contract:

  • Cameron McInnes (Captain): A vital leader and workhorse, currently recovering from an ACL injury.
  • Braden Uele: A key forward in the pack.
  • Jesse Ramien: A dynamic centre known for his attacking prowess.
  • Sione Katoa: A dangerous winger with try-scoring ability.
  • Siosifa Talakai: A powerful and versatile backline player.
  • Toby Rudolf: An energetic front-rower.
  • Will Kennedy: A reliable fullback with strong running game.

The club’s ability to retain a core group of these players while also nurturing emerging talent will be crucial in determining their future competitiveness in the NRL. The coming months will be a defining period for the Cronulla Sharks as they navigate this significant roster challenge.
