Captain Kirk Goes Heavy Metal: William Shatner Announces Thrash-Worthy New Album
At 94 years young, legendary Star Trek actor William Shatner is proving that age is merely a number when it comes to exploring new sonic frontiers. Forget the quiet retirement one might expect from a veteran of the entertainment industry; Shatner is boldly going where few captains – or octogenarians – have gone before: the world of heavy metal.
In a characteristically enthusiastic announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Shatner declared his intention to release a heavy metal album, promising a journey into “distortion” after decades spent exploring space and time. “Yes. You read that correctly,” he proclaimed. “I am releasing a HEAVY METAL album.”
The upcoming record is set to be an ambitious undertaking, described by Shatner as featuring “35 metal virtuosos, thunderous guitars, and chaos with purpose.” Fans can anticipate a potent mix of covers from iconic metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, and Judas Priest, alongside original material “forged in the same cosmic fire.” Shatner elaborated on the project’s ethos, stating, “This project is, quite literally, a gathering of forces. Loud imagination. Honest intensity. Unapologetic exploration.” He added, with characteristic flair, “At 94, one does not slow down. One turns the volume up. So prepare yourselves. We are about to boldly headbang where no one has headbanged before.”
Cleopatra Records, the label behind the venture, echoed Shatner’s excitement, describing the album as a “high-voltage film” built on “massive guitars, cinematic arrangements, and Shatner’s signature vocal intensity.” They highlighted the record’s dynamic range, noting its sharp turns, dark humour, raw emotion, and moments of unexpected beauty. The label emphasised that this is not merely a novelty project but a significant statement, uniting a diverse group of respected metal musicians under Shatner’s unique vision.
Genesis of the Metal Mission
The spark for this heavy metal endeavour reportedly ignited while Shatner was collaborating on an upcoming album for Nuclear Messiah, a project that itself aims to assemble over 34 musicians into a “mega-powered supergroup.” Shatner contributed a spoken-word introduction to Nuclear Messiah’s Black Flame record, working alongside Chris Poland, the founding guitarist of thrash metal pioneers Megadeth.
“When Nuclear Messiah came to life, something clicked,” Shatner revealed. “It wasn’t just a track – it was a doorway. It made me want to go all the way in, bring in the best metal players I could find, and create something fearless.” This experience evidently solidified his desire to dive headfirst into the metal genre.
While specific details regarding the release date and tracklisting for Shatner’s heavy metal album are yet to be announced, fans can rest assured that more information will be forthcoming from Cleopatra Records.
A Long and Varied Career in the Arts
William Shatner’s journey to the captain’s chair of the USS Enterprise began in 1966, where he cemented his iconic status as Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek series. His portrayal continued through the animated spin-off in 1973 and the first seven Star Trek feature films, released between 1979 and 1994.

However, Shatner’s creative output extends far beyond his most famous role. This foray into heavy metal is not his first venture into the music world. His debut album, The Transformed Man, released in 1968, showcased his distinctive spoken-word vocal style, a departure from conventional singing that has become a hallmark of his musical endeavours.
Over the subsequent decades, Shatner has released a diverse range of albums, exploring genres from progressive rock with covers of Pink Floyd to festive Christmas classics. His career has spanned both the silver screen and the television set, demonstrating a consistent drive to explore different artistic avenues.

Shatner’s willingness to embrace new challenges, even at this advanced stage of his career, serves as an inspiration. His decision to tackle heavy metal highlights a spirit of fearless exploration and a commitment to pushing boundaries, proving that the final frontier for creativity is truly limitless.
