Unexpected Move Sparks Excitement and Reflection
Payne Haas’ decision to join the South Sydney Rabbitohs has sent shockwaves through the rugby league community. The move, kept so secret that even the NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo was unaware, marks a significant shift in the landscape of the sport. Haas, a towering presence in the game, is set to sign a three-year deal with the Rabbitohs, pending no complications during the cooling-off period. This announcement came as a complete surprise, leaving fans and officials alike stunned.

Abdo expressed his astonishment at the news, highlighting the positive impact it could have on both the Rabbitohs and the Broncos. “It’s terrific for Rabbitohs fans that they’ve got something to look forward to in a year’s time, but it’s also great for Broncos fans that they get to see Payne go out and play as he has for the past few years for one more season,” he said.
Haas made his debut against the Rabbitohs in 2018 and has since become one of the most dominant forwards in the world. His departure from the Broncos is a major blow, but it has also sparked a sense of motivation among the team. Injured star Billy Walters believes the loss can serve as a catalyst for the Broncos to achieve back-to-back premierships before Haas and Adam Reynolds retire.

“It was a bit of a weird one because it was a shock, but that’s all part of rugby league because you never know what’s going to happen,” Walters remarked. “Although it’s disappointing that we’re losing Payne, he’s been so good for our club and has probably been the best forward for the past five years.”
Walters also shared his mixed feelings about facing Haas next year. “I’m not looking forward to tackling him next year, so I’m looking forward to having him this year where he’s on my team.” He acknowledged the significance of Haas’ move, stating that it is a huge signing for the Rabbitohs.
The Rabbitohs are also dealing with their own challenges, having finished in the bottom four in each of the past two seasons. However, the arrival of Haas is seen as a significant step towards recovery. Keaon Koloamatangi’s move to the Dragons earlier in the year was a setback, but the club is now looking to build momentum.

Cam Murray, the Rabbitohs’ skipper, expressed his surprise at the news but also his appreciation for the club’s efforts. “But I thought the club did really well to keep everything under wraps and go shopping. I really don’t know what happened behind closed doors and I was as surprised as everyone else when I found out.”
Murray praised the club’s approach to negotiations, noting the respect shown throughout the process. “Whatever happened was very respectful with the secrecy and how they kept everything in those negotiations private.” He emphasized the importance of the move for the Rabbitohs, stating that it represents a positive shift for the club.
“I’m stoked, everyone is. I’m just really happy that Payne’s got the confidence that he can come here and find success at this club and contribute to what we’ve been doing,” Murray added. While excited about the future, he also stressed the need to focus on the present. “I’m really happy with the news, but that’s next year. We have to get over it as fast as we can and focus on being successful this year.”
