Obstructive sleep apnoea is a serious condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the muscles in the throat relax during sleep, causing the airway to narrow or close. There are already several positional devices available on the market. One example is a belt that vibrates when the user rolls onto their back, prompting them to change position. Another option is a vest with a ball sewn into the back, which discourages sleeping on the back.

These devices offer a non-invasive alternative to traditional treatments. Currently, there is no drug licensed specifically for treating sleep apnoea. Most patients are prescribed continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines, which deliver air through a mask to keep the airways open during sleep.

However, many patients find CPAP masks uncomfortable and struggle to use them consistently. As many as half of users discontinue their use due to discomfort or inconvenience.

A Promising Alternative

Experts believe that the latest research could provide a simple and effective solution for those who find CPAP difficult to tolerate. Dr Irene Cano-Pumarega, head of the sleep unit at Madrid’s Ramon y Cajal Hospital and one of the researchers behind the study, said that positional therapy was not only effective but also better tolerated than CPAP.

“This approach offers a viable alternative for patients who cannot or do not want to use CPAP,” she said. “It’s a practical and sustainable solution that can improve quality of life.”

Sleeping on the side is known to reduce the likelihood of airway blockage. This is especially important for people with positional sleep apnoea. By maintaining this position throughout the night, patients can experience fewer apnoea events and improved sleep quality.
