Rajasthan Royals’ Struggles Continue as Delhi Capitals Secure Victory
Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered their fourth loss of the season, this time at the hands of Delhi Capitals (DC) in Jaipur. The match saw a strong opening partnership between Pathum Nissanka and KL Rahul, who scored 62 and 75 runs respectively off 33 and 40 balls. Their 110-run stand proved too much for RR to handle, leading to a 7-wicket defeat.
Despite this setback, RR remains in contention with six wins so far in the tournament. However, one player has drawn criticism for his performance—veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. His batting form has been under scrutiny, particularly in the lower middle order.
Jadeja made a dramatic return to his original franchise, RR, as part of a trade deal that saw Sanju Samson move to Chennai Super Kings. But his performance in IPL 2026 has not met expectations. In seven innings, he has scored 152 runs at an average of 50.67, but his strike rate of 129.91 is a cause for concern.
In the match against DC, Jadeja struggled to find his rhythm. He took nine balls to score his first boundary before being dismissed by Mitchell Starc for 20 runs off 14 balls. This lack of aggression has raised questions about his approach, especially when facing spin bowlers.
A Critique from a Former Teammate
Ravichandran Ashwin, Jadeja’s former India and Chennai Super Kings teammate, highlighted this issue on his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’. He pointed out that Jadeja has not been taking on spinners aggressively enough, despite repeated advice from coaches.
Ashwin said:
“Many people, including coaches, have spoken to Ravindra Jadeja about taking on spinners more aggressively, but he is not listening. During the 2024 T20 World Cup, whenever India needed a left-hander up the order, they chose Axar Patel over the more experienced Jadeja. The reason is simple, Axar doesn’t hesitate. He takes on spinners and every other bowler with confidence.”
This criticism is not new. Jadeja has struggled against spin bowling since IPL 2020, with teams exploiting his weaknesses to get him out. Between 2020 and 2025, his strike rate against spin dropped to just 94.28, the lowest among regular middle-order batsmen. This trend continues into IPL 2026, where he has faced 117 balls and managed only 12 fours and two sixes.
A Comparison with MS Dhoni
In contrast, MS Dhoni, who exclusively plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, has shown remarkable consistency against spin. Over 241 T20 innings, he has scored 2112 runs at a strike rate of 108.97 and an average of 43.1. His ability to adapt and take on spinners has made him a key player for CSK.
Jadeja’s struggles against spin have become a recurring theme, and it remains to be seen whether he can adjust his approach to improve his performance. With RR still in the race for the playoffs, his role in the team will be crucial in the coming matches.
Key Challenges for Jadeja
- Low Strike Rate: Jadeja’s strike rate of 129.91 is below par for a middle-order batsman.
- Struggles Against Spin: Since 2020, his performance against spin has declined significantly.
- Lack of Aggression: Critics argue that he is too cautious, especially against spin bowlers.
- Need for Adjustment: Jadeja must find a way to adapt his approach to remain effective in the tournament.
As the IPL progresses, Jadeja will need to address these issues if he wants to make a meaningful contribution to Rajasthan Royals’ campaign.
