Silva: Fulham’s Big Win at Sunderland

Fulham Secures Crucial Away Win Against Sunderland

Fulham manager Marco Silva declared it a “big win” as his side bounced back from a three-game losing streak in the Premier League with a convincing 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The win not only boosts Fulham’s league position but also marks them as only the second team, after Liverpool, to have defeated Sunderland on their home turf this season.

The match, initially a cagey affair with both teams struggling to find their rhythm in the first half, ignited after the break. The turning point came with a seven-minute blitz from Fulham striker Raul Jimenez. He opened the scoring with a header from an Alex Iwobi corner, before doubling his tally from the penalty spot.

While Sunderland managed to pull one back through Enzo Le Fee, also from a penalty, Fulham sealed their victory in the 85th minute. Alex Iwobi showcased his composure with a cool finish into the corner, securing the crucial three points for the Cottagers.

Silva expressed his satisfaction with the win, highlighting its importance after a series of disappointing Premier League results. “We knew that it was going to be another crucial game for us and it was going to be very important to come from some not good results for us in the Premier League,” he stated. “After an incredible run during January and December too, we wanted to bounce back in a place that has been very difficult for all the teams to play against Sunderland.”

He further elaborated on the challenge of playing at the Stadium of Light, noting Sunderland’s strong home record. “They just lost the last home game before this one against Liverpool. It was not a coincidence that they were the only team unbeaten in the Premier League when they played that game against Liverpool and we knew it. A tough place to come.”

A Goal of Exceptional Quality

Beyond the final score, Silva was particularly impressed with the build-up to Fulham’s third goal. The move began with Harry Wilson intercepting a cleared Sunderland corner and embarking on a blistering counter-attack. Wilson’s intelligent run and precise pass set up Iwobi, who made no mistake with his finish.

“After the 2-1 is the moment that pleased me more really about our side,” Silva commented. “We handled very well the pressure, the stadium buzzing in that moment, that quality, that pressure. We scored the third goal in an incredible moment from us, very good counter-attack, everything Harry Wilson did until the moment of the pass was brilliant. Top finishing from Alex.”

Silva acknowledged the hard-fought nature of the victory. “We won the game, (it was) deserved, a big fight. Credit for Sunderland on the way they made life difficult for us. Lots of times the game was tough and injuries for them, for us as well.”

Sunderland’s Disappointment and Lessons Learned

On the Sunderland side, manager Regis Le Bris described the day as “tough” following their third consecutive league defeat. The Black Cats were hampered by injuries in the first half, losing Nordi Mukiele and Jocelin Ta Bi.

Despite these setbacks, Sunderland showed promise at the start of the second half, with Romaine Mundle missing a significant chance before Fulham’s opening goal.

Le Bris reflected on the key turning points in the match. “A tough day because it’s a defeat at home. Key moments defined this game,” he said. “We had the opportunity during the second half to score and just after they scored twice on set-pieces.”

He admitted that the team’s performance in the first half was not up to par. “Probably our first half wasn’t controlled enough, we struggled to find the right rhythm. We got two injuries, which didn’t help, but we were probably a bit sloppy, lack of quality with the ball and we didn’t control this part of the game properly.”

While acknowledging a positive reaction at the start of the second half, Le Bris conceded that crucial moments and the quality of the opposition ultimately made the difference. “The reaction at the beginning of the second half was good, but it was a reaction and after that key moments. Like in the Premier League you have, we had a strong opponent who then had the quality to score.”

The defeat leaves Sunderland with much to ponder as they look to address their recent form and identify areas for improvement in the demanding Premier League campaign.
