Harper’s Sheffield Shield Masterclass Puts Him in Test Contention
Sam Harper has delivered another emphatic statement to national selectors, signalling his readiness to potentially step into the shoes of Usman Khawaja in the Australian Test side. The in-form Victorian opener has enjoyed a summer of cricket to remember, and his impressive run continued in the Sheffield Shield clash against Tasmania on Thursday. Harper smashed a brilliant 93 off 115 balls, coming to his side’s rescue when they were in dire straits.
The day in Hobart was a truly dramatic affair, with a staggering 14 wickets tumbling. Victoria found themselves bowled out for 222 after being sent in by the home side. Tasmania managed to reach 4-52 by the close of play on day one. Charlie Wakim, on 9, and nightwatchman Matt Kuhnemann, on 3, will be tasked with the crucial job of reducing Victoria’s advantage when play resumes on Friday.
Victoria were in a precarious position at 2-0 early on, with veteran quick Jackson Bird claiming two early wickets, removing opener Campbell Kellaway and Blake Macdonald for ducks. However, Harper emerged as the saviour for his team, narrowly missing out on a third consecutive Sheffield Shield century for the table-topping Victorians.
Harper’s stellar summer form has been a revelation. He was a standout performer in the Big Bash League, earning Player of the Season honours for his impressive 371 runs at an average of 61.83 for the Melbourne Stars. The 29-year-old has seamlessly translated his exceptional white-ball prowess into the longer format of the Sheffield Shield. His promotion to opener has seen him surge into Test calculations.
The Victorian opener faced a tense moment on 81 when he was struck on the helmet by a fierce bouncer from Tasmania’s leading wicket-taker, Riley Meredith (4-53). Despite the scare, Harper responded emphatically, hitting back-to-back sixes as he homed in on what would have been his third successive Shield ton.

Sam Harper makes latest stunning case for a Test call-up
Ultimately, Harper fell just short of the milestone, caught in the deep by Beau Webster after skying a shot off Meredith through the off-side. His crucial partnership with Matt Short (40) was instrumental in turning the tide for Victoria before Short was also dismissed, caught in the gully off Meredith.
Harper’s previous innings, a magnificent 119 and an unbeaten 141 in the win against Western Australia, were pivotal in securing top spot for Victoria and guaranteeing them home-ground advantage for the Sheffield Shield final. Following his latest dazzling display, there’s a growing chorus of fan sentiment advocating for Harper to be the long-term successor to the recently retired Usman Khawaja as Australia’s Test opening batsman.
Tasmania Faces Uphill Battle in Shield Clash
Following Harper’s outstanding knock, Victoria’s seam bowlers capitalised to put Tasmania under immense pressure. Fergus O’Neill, bowling economically, took 1-8 from his nine overs, while Sam Elliott proved potent, claiming 2-13. O’Neill struck early, dismissing Tassie opener Macalister Wright for a mere 12. Elliott then followed up by removing Tim Ward (17) and the home skipper Jordan Silk (2), further consolidating Victoria’s strong position.
Mitchell Perry, another of Victoria’s quicks, also joined the wicket-taking party, accounting for Tasmania’s other opener, Caleb Jewell, who was dismissed for two. The fourth-placed Tasmanians are currently missing Test opener Jake Weatherald due to back spasms. They are embroiled in a tight four-way battle with Queensland, South Australia, and New South Wales for a coveted spot in the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria. Tasmania’s fate could hinge on their potentially decisive final-round game against Queensland, which commences on March 14.
