Sony Pictures is clearly committed to expanding its Spider-Man universe, and it appears they’re doing so by doubling down on what’s already proven to be a massive success. While anticipation is high for Tom Holland’s next outing in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, the studio has now officially confirmed that two more animated Spider-Man spinoff films are in the works. This move seems like a remarkably shrewd one, especially considering that ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’ is slated to bring the critically acclaimed animated trilogy to a close in 2027. Many believed this would signal the end of the Spider-Verse era, but Sony is clearly positioning it as a new beginning.
Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk Take Centre Stage
Executives at Sony Pictures Animation, Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, have affirmed that two new spinoffs, inspired by the groundbreaking ‘Spider-Verse’ films, are officially in development. While they haven’t explicitly named the characters, previous industry reports have strongly indicated that standalone movies focusing on Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk are on the cards. Audiences have already shown immense love for Hailee Steinfeld’s portrayal of Gwen Stacy and Daniel Kaluuya’s energetic performance as Hobie Brown (Spider-Punk) in ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’.

It’s only natural, therefore, for Sony to explore their individual narratives further within the animated medium. These particular iterations of Spider-Man characters are celebrated for their unique aesthetic creativity, emotional depth, and distinct stylistic approaches. These are qualities that would undoubtedly be more challenging to translate to live-action without running into the inherent complexities of the multiverse narrative.
Adding to the excitement, Daniel Kaluuya has recently hinted that the script for Spider-Punk’s film is nearing completion. This suggests that at least one of these new animated projects is progressing well, which is a thrilling prospect given the overwhelmingly positive reception these characters have received from viewers.
A Strategic Leap for the Franchise Post-Trilogy
The confirmation of these animated spinoffs also helps to resolve a larger strategic question for the future of the Spider-Man franchise. Following the conclusion of ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, there’s a strong assumption that Miles Morales’ animated saga might pave the way for a live-action adaptation. This could potentially place him within the Marvel Cinematic Universe or at the forefront of Sony’s next live-action Spider-Man chapter.
By choosing to develop Spider-Gwen and Spider-Punk as animated protagonists, Sony can preserve the integrity and unique appeal of these beloved characters without risking an over-saturation of variants in future live-action films.
The current multiverse landscape is already quite crowded. Attempting to shoehorn too many different Spider-people into a single live-action movie could dilute their individual impact and effectiveness. Animation, on the other hand, provides these characters with the necessary space to develop and flourish. It allows for the kind of visual experimentation and bold narrative risks that have become synonymous with the success of the ‘Spider-Verse’ franchise.

More importantly, this strategy maintains the momentum. Instead of concluding a highly successful animated era, Sony is effectively transforming it into a launchpad for new adventures. For long-time fans, this offers a comforting sense of continuity. For the broader audience, it presents an alluring opportunity to dive deeper into these vibrant characters. And for the Spider-Man brand as a whole? This could prove to be an ideal long-term strategy.
