Melbourne Faces Midfield Crisis as Jack Viney Sidelined
Melbourne Football Club is facing a significant challenge in the midfield department following the news that vice-captain Jack Viney will be out for nearly half of the AFL season. The club has been forced to conduct a “raffle” for midfield spots under the guidance of new coach Steven King, as Viney prepares for Achilles surgery on Tuesday.
Viney’s injury has been a long-standing issue, with the 31-year-old midfielder experiencing Achilles soreness since December. Initially, the club remained optimistic that he would be fit for the round-one clash against St Kilda in January. However, further complications arose when Viney picked up a back injury while attempting to return to full training.

Captain Max Gawn confirmed that Viney is unlikely to feature in the first three months of the season. Speaking to Triple M, Gawn said, “He’s tried to manage them throughout the pre-season and hasn’t quite got on top of them, and they’ve decided to go down that path.”
This development leaves Gawn as the sole regular in the engine room, following the departures of Christian Petracca (Gold Coast) and Clayton Oliver (GWS), both All-Australians and 2021 premiership players. Jake Bowey, another key defender, is also sidelined after undergoing foot surgery in December, while fellow defender Steven May has been notably absent from training.
May and Richmond midfielder Dion Prestia are currently dealing with criminal charges related to a late-2024 brawl in Sorrento on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. Gawn commented on May’s absence, saying, “Maysey hasn’t been in for a while. There’s not much I can comment on at all. We haven’t seen him for a little bit, but hopefully we might see him soon.”
Despite these challenges, Gawn expressed optimism about the club’s new recruitment. He highlighted the value of Jack Steele, the former Saints skipper who joined Melbourne at the end of last year in search of more midfield minutes. Gawn remarked, “Jack Steele looks really handy. If you look at our midfield for the past 10 years, you could almost say it’d be Gawn, Viney, Oliver and Petracca. This year, it’s a raffle on every single one of the spots, and I think that’s an advantage, to be honest. We could have six or seven guys that can play in there.”
Young talents such as Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay will have the opportunity to prove themselves, alongside experienced players Trent Rivers and Tom Sparrow. Meanwhile, Melbourne hopes that fellow midfielder Jai Culley will be fit for round one after recovering from an arm fracture sustained during training.
With the first pre-season match simulation against North Melbourne scheduled for February 20, coach Steven King will have the chance to experiment with his midfield options. The Demons are determined to adapt to their current challenges and emerge stronger in the upcoming season.
