Steve Perry Shoots Down Journey Reunion Rumours Ahead of Farewell Tour

Speculation has been rife that original frontman Steve Perry might make a comeback to join his former band, Journey, for their upcoming farewell tour. However, the veteran singer has now publicly addressed these rumours, firmly denying any plans to rejoin the iconic rock group.

Perry, 77, a pivotal figure in Journey’s most successful era, first joined the San Francisco-based band in 1977. His distinctive vocals graced their biggest hits, including the enduring anthem “Don’t Stop Believin’,” released in 1981.

The band initially took a hiatus in 1987 following the passing of Perry’s mother. A reunion with Perry for the 1996 album Trial By Fire was met with enthusiasm. However, Perry’s decision to step away from touring the record, due to a diagnosed degenerative bone condition, led to his replacement by Steve Augeri in 1998. Augeri’s tenure eventually saw him replaced by Filipino cover band singer Arnel Pineda in 2007. Pineda has since become the band’s longest-serving frontman and is the expected vocalist for the farewell tour.

Adding fuel to the reunion fire, Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain recently indicated in an interview that Perry had indeed been invited to participate in the tour and was “thinking about it.” Cain expressed his hope for Perry’s involvement, stating, “It’s never too late. We’ve got 100 shows, so he’s welcome at any one of them. He didn’t say no, leave it at that.”

However, Perry himself has now issued a clear statement to quell the persistent rumours. In a post shared on X, he directly addressed his fans:

“To all my friends – I’ve been hearing these recent rumors, and I wanted to speak to you all directly.

While I’m always grateful for the love people still have for Journey, the rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true, and I want to gently put them to rest.

I completely understand why people would hope for that. The music we created together means a great deal to me too. But I’m continuing to explore new creative work and really enjoy working on new music that reflects where I am today.

Thank you for your continued support throughout the years. Your loyalty has never gone unnoticed, and I am forever humbly grateful. Sincerely, Steve Perry.”

Journey has confirmed that their upcoming tour will mark their final performances. The “Final Frontier Tour” is slated to visit 60 cities across North America and Canada, with the initial leg commencing on February 28 and concluding on July 2.

The current lineup of Journey for this farewell tour comprises:

  • Arnel Pineda (vocals)
  • Jonathan Cain (keyboards)
  • Neal Schon (guitar)
  • Deen Castronovo (drums)
  • Todd Jensen (bass)
  • Jason Derlatka (keyboards)

It’s worth noting that tensions have reportedly existed between keyboardist Jonathan Cain and guitarist Neal Schon in recent times. Last year, Schon publicly announced Cain’s departure from the band following a series of legal disputes between the two bandmates. However, Schon later clarified that Cain would remain with Journey until the conclusion of their final tour.

The band’s decision to embark on a farewell tour after decades of hits signals the end of an era for many long-time fans. While a Perry reunion would have been a nostalgic dream for many, his focus on new creative endeavours and his gratitude for continued fan support highlight a positive path forward for the legendary singer.
