PlayStation 5 Edges Out Nintendo Switch 2 in US Sales Amidst Shifting Market Dynamics
In a surprising turn of events for the gaming industry, Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) has managed to outsell the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 for two consecutive months in the United States. This marks a significant development, especially considering the Nintendo Switch 2’s initial status as the fastest-selling console of all time. While the Switch 2’s momentum has been undeniable, recent sales figures suggest a potential cooling off, particularly in Western markets.
Nintendo itself has acknowledged that the Switch 2’s performance during the recent Christmas season fell short of expectations in the West. The company attributed this to a perceived lack of titles that strongly resonate with Western audiences. This admission adds a layer of context to the latest sales data, which shows the PS5 taking the lead in both unit sales and total dollar revenue in January and February.
Mat Piscatella, the senior director at Circana, a firm that tracks consumer behaviour and sales data, highlighted this trend. He confirmed that the PS5 outperformed the Nintendo Switch 2 in both measures during February. This follows a similar pattern observed in January, where the Switch 2 ranked second in both sales categories.
Despite this recent dip in monthly sales, it’s crucial to note that the Nintendo Switch 2 is still performing exceptionally well when compared to its predecessor. Piscatella pointed out that in its first nine months on the market, the Switch 2’s cumulative installed base is tracking a substantial 45% ahead of the original Nintendo Switch. This indicates that the console’s overall success remains robust, even if recent monthly figures show a shift in dominance.
The strong performance of the Nintendo Switch 2 has, in fact, helped to offset year-on-year declines in hardware spending across other major consoles, including the PS5, the original Switch, and the Xbox Series X/S. In February, the total hardware spending across all consoles saw a healthy increase of 22% compared to the same period last year, suggesting a generally positive market sentiment for gaming hardware.
Decoding the Sales Shift: What’s Driving the PS5’s Resurgence?
The question on many minds is: what’s behind the PS5’s recent sales triumph over the Switch 2 in the US, especially when PS5 sales have seen a year-on-year decline? Several factors could be at play. One possibility is that the initial surge of Switch 2 sales has naturally tapered off after its blockbuster launch months. Another significant factor could be the absence of a major, broadly appealing exclusive title for the Switch 2 in the immediate post-holiday period, which might have deterred more casual players from making a purchase.
The upcoming launch of Pokémon Pokopia, a Switch 2 exclusive, could significantly alter this trend. The game has already demonstrated immense popularity, selling 2.2 million copies worldwide in its first four days, with a substantial one million of those sales occurring in Japan. Its performance in the US will be a key indicator of the Switch 2’s future trajectory.
Without any apparent major discounts on the PS5 in the US last month, the reasons for its continued sales lead remain somewhat speculative. However, a strong contributing factor is likely the relatively thin software lineup for the Switch 2 in the early part of 2026. This scarcity of must-have titles could be pushing consumers who are on the fence to opt for the more established PS5, which benefits from a consistent stream of new releases and established franchises.
Software Dominance: Resident Evil Requiem Takes the Crown
On the software front, the gaming landscape has seen a significant shake-up. Resident Evil Requiem has burst onto the scene, debuting as the best-selling game of 2026 in the US. It has successfully surpassed established titans like NBA 2K26 and Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 in sales.
Capcom has confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem is not only the top seller but also the fastest-selling game in the Resident Evil series to date, having already sold over six million copies globally. The game’s launch week dollar sales were a remarkable 60% higher than those of Resident Evil Village in 2021, underscoring its massive appeal and critical reception.

February’s gaming charts also featured other notable new entries. Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined made a strong debut at number nine, while Mario Tennis Fever landed at the eleventh spot. It’s important to note that these figures for Nintendo releases typically do not include digital sales, which is a common practice for the company’s reporting.
Further down the charts, God Of War: Sons Of Sparta entered at number 14, followed by My Hero Academia: All’s Justice at 17. The Resident Evil Generation Pack, a compilation featuring Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village, and the new Resident Evil Requiem, also made a significant impact, debuting at number 20. This strong performance across multiple titles indicates a dynamic and competitive market for game releases.
