Formation of a Task Force for Financial Support to Integrated Local Governments
Cheong Wa Dae has taken a significant step towards supporting integrated local governments by establishing a “Task Force (TF) for Financial Support to Integrated Local Governments.” This initiative was announced through a written briefing by spokesperson Kim Nam-jun on the 20th. The task force aims to discuss and implement financial assistance strategies for integrated special cities, such as Daejeon-Chungnam and Gwangju-Jeonnam.
The government’s plan includes providing up to 5 trillion won annually for four years, totaling 40 trillion won, to support these integrated cities. This financial commitment reflects the government’s recognition of the importance of regional integration and economic development. The TF is now in the process of making practical preparations to ensure that this funding can be effectively utilized.
Leadership and Key Participants
The head of the TF will be Kim Yong-beom, who serves as the Policy Office Head of Cheong Wa Dae. Two co-rapporteurs have been appointed: Ryu Deock-hyun, fiscal planning adviser, and Lim Ki-keun, Vice Minister of Planning and Budget. These key figures bring valuable expertise and experience to the task force, ensuring that the financial support measures are well-informed and strategically aligned with national priorities.
In addition to the leadership roles, several high-ranking officials from Cheong Wa Dae will be involved in the task force. Hong Ik-pyo, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, and Ha Joon-kyung, Senior Secretary for Economic Growth, are among those participating. Their involvement underscores the importance of political and economic considerations in shaping the financial support framework.
Representatives from various ministries will also play a crucial role in the task force. This includes vice ministers from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, and Ministry of Education. The collaboration across different sectors ensures a comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of integrated local governments.
Operational Structure of the Task Force
To facilitate effective operations, a working-level TF will be established. This group will consist of directors-general from related ministries and administrative officers from Cheong Wa Dae’s relevant senior secretaries and secretariats. The working-level TF will operate under the supervision of the fiscal planning adviser, ensuring that all activities align with the overall objectives of the task force.
Spokesperson Kim emphasized the urgency of the task force’s work, stating that the government plans to hold the first meeting within January following the TF’s launch. This timeline highlights the government’s commitment to swiftly preparing and announcing detailed measures for financial support to integrated local governments.
Conclusion
The formation of the TF marks a pivotal moment in the government’s efforts to support integrated local governments. By bringing together experts from various sectors and ministries, the task force is well-positioned to develop effective financial support strategies. The upcoming meetings and the implementation of detailed measures will be critical in ensuring that the allocated funds are used efficiently and effectively to promote regional development and economic growth.
