Tributes pour in for footy star after tragic spinal injury

Remembering Kurt Drysdale: A Life of Resilience and Joy

Kurt Drysdale, a beloved figure in the rugby league community, has passed away after a recent battle with pneumonia. His death has left a deep void in the hearts of many, especially those who knew him personally and those who admired his incredible journey.

Drysdale was just 20 years old when he suffered a life-changing spinal injury during a football match in June 2015 while playing for the Cabramatta Two Blues in the Ron Massey Cup competition. The incident left him paralyzed, but that didn’t stop him from becoming a source of inspiration for many.

Throughout his life, Drysdale had close connections with several NRL stars, including Alex Johnston, Valentine Holmes, and most notably, former Parramatta backrower Shaun Lane. His friendships were a testament to his warm and caring personality, which brought joy to everyone around him.

Before his injury, Drysdale showed great promise as a junior player with the Cronulla Sharks. He played for the Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams before joining the club’s under-20s (NYC) squad for the 2014 season. His talent on the field was evident, and many believed he had the potential to make it to the NRL as a hooker.

In the wake of his passing, tributes poured in from across the rugby league community. Former NRL star Denan Kemp took to social media to express his condolences, as did footy journeymen Fa’amanu Brown and Brad Takairangi. The Perry Cross Spinal Research Foundation also shared a heartfelt message, highlighting how Drysdale’s presence brought joy and positivity to all who knew him.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our much loved and cherished Cure Crusader Ambassador, Kurt Drysdale,” the foundation said in a Facebook post. “His cheeky grin and kind, caring personality brought so much joy to everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed by all of us at the Foundation.”

The foundation extended its condolences to Drysdale’s parents, Sonya and Steve, as well as his family and friends. They expressed their hope that he would rest in peace.

A Friendship That Inspired

Shaun Lane, who had been a close friend of Drysdale since childhood, made a vow in 2022 ahead of the NRL Grand Final to win a premiership ring for his friend. “The next time I visit him, I’m going with a premiership ring, how good would that be,” Lane said before the match, which was won by the Penrith Panthers.

“Kurt can have selfies with the ring, that’s the plan. When I look back at how much Kurt loved football, and how much he would kill to be in the position that I am…he’s been a constant motivator for me. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see what happened to him.”

On Tuesday, Lane offered a moving tribute to his good mate. “Kurt was a genuinely beautiful human, he was fun-loving, caring and kind,” Lane told the Daily Mail. “Wherever Kurt went, joy and laughter would follow. Even in the aftermath of his accident which would have broken so many others, he remained playful, compassionate and was always smiling.”

“He was as brave and resilient as anyone I’ve ever met…and he just kept on fighting. I have so many great memories that we have shared over the last 20 years and I’ll be forever grateful to have had such a loving friend in my life. I will miss my mate.”

Support for the Drysdale Family

In 2016, Channel Nine’s A Current Affair launched a fundraiser in collaboration with Rotary International to help the Drysdale family with the financial burden they faced after the accident. Just 24 hours after the appeal, more than $515,000 was raised for the football star.

Many people in the rugby league community believe that Drysdale had the potential to play in the NRL as a hooker. His story is one of resilience, friendship, and an unwavering spirit that touched the lives of many.
